Leader:Roger Postbeschild |
Start Time:8:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF RIDE.There are various forecasts for Saturday, all on the distinctly warm side come the afternoon. Under the circumstances, I am reverting to the half day format, with an early start to hopefully keep reasonably cool. A regular route out to Ashbury for coffee, starting at 8.30. I know, it's a bit early but you will be glad really! The early start time will allow you all plenty of time to wander around air-conditioned supermarkets in the afternoon. Please text me if you would like to ride. |

Riders:Barry StantonDavid Jackson Des Higgs Gerry Jones Jenny Gower John Groves Karl Blake Roger Postbeschild Stephanie Haddrell Terry Penn Riders = 10 Weather:Report:Lovely conditions at 8.30 and a northeasterly tail wind made for an easy run out to Shrivenham and Bourton and the plan to arrive at the café in Ashbury worked well, they opened at 10.00 and we arrived at 10.10.Your leader had unfortunately omitted to inform the café that 10 cyclists were due to descend at once and the lone staff member had a bit of a wobble. Mea Culpa! Reinforcements arrived and smiles returned, we were all fully serviced and left at around 11.00. The northeasterly headwind was pleasantly cooling on the way back, Des peeled off to return home, having cycled out. Great to see Jenny and Terry out on a club ride. Iced lattes were enjoyed by some of us on our return to Parsons. The earlier start was fully justified as it was getting quite steamy by the time we got back. | ||

The ride will now start by the Manor Primary School in Lydalls Close off Foxhall Road. (The close is not a through road, so to park please enter at the west end from Foxhall Road and park on the left.) You can zoom into the start of the route in RWGPS (link below) and switch to satellite mode for an overview. An awayday ride from Didcot this month to allow us to tour some quiet routes and pretty villages in the eastern Vale. There is a short-stretch of stony unmade road at the start but we will soon pick up the NCN route 5 cycleways through town and head out to the Wittenhams. After passing Wittenham Clumps, we'll turn south through the Moretons and the Astons (with an optional twin-village tour if we are so minded) en route to a refreshment stop at the Style Acre cafe at Savages garden centre in Blewbury. After tea, we'll make use of an easy off-road route to Upton, where we'll pick up NCN 544 to return to Didcot along the old railway embankment. This gives lovely panoramic views across the Vale. A short stretch of the NCN 5 past the station will bring us back to our starting point. A round trip of about 19 miles. Please text me to book a place. Our regular family and social afternoon rides on the third Saturday of the month covering 16-32km (10-20 miles), usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs. |

Riders:Eddie LittleLorna Swanton Michael Tayler Nick Portsmouth Roger Postbeschild Steve Swanton Susan Holdroyd Tim Waite Riders = 8 Weather:Report:It’s always nice to start somewhere different and have less familiar roads (and in this case cycleways) to follow from the start. Eight of us set off from a sunny Didcot. Having negotiated the unpaved section of Lydall’s Close, we soon joined the cycleway network and NCN route 5. Once we had passed under the railway, we had a choice of routes. With Michael’s guidance we bore right to take an alternative path through the Ladygrove estate, rejoining route 5 by Ladygrove lakes. The tunnel under the ring road seemed very dark and bumpy but from then on the path was much improved since we last came this way. The stretch across the field to Long Wittenham in particular has a lovely new hard surface. We rejoined the road at Long Wittenham, turning off towards Little Wittenham at the end of the High Street with a great view of the clumps opening out ahead of us. From Little Wittenham, there is a long but steady climb up beside the clumps to the car park. Everyone made it up at good speed and we enjoyed a rest and the views from the top. With several riders wishing to avail themselves of the local hedges, we agreed to regroup at the top of Sires Hill below. Unfortunately, on the climb up to Sires hill one rider felt unwell and needed to stop. Having assessed the situation, two of us stayed with them while Roger took the rest of the group on through the Moretons, Astons and Blewbury for tea. They just made it to Style Acre before they closed at 4pm. Fortunately, we were soon reassured that, after a rest, our fellow rider was feeling much better, so the 3 of us continued slowly over Sires Hill and dropped down to the junction with the A4130 Wallingford Road where arrangements had been made for a pickup. Two of us then continued on to the Moretons and the Astons. Knowing that we would not make tea, we took a short-cut back to Didcot via East Hagbourne arriving at the cars just a few minutes before the rest of the group, who themselves had taken a short-cut through the streets of Didcot under Michael’s direction. The change of starting point worked well with just enough parking space available to accommodate our 6 cars. Thanks to Michael for the suggestion and for directing us through the back routes of Didcot. Thanks too to Roger for leading the main group after we split and Eddie for the photos. I am pleased to report that all is well with our fellow rider too. | ||

Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. This is a bookable ride for up to 10 people. Please let me know if you want to come and see below for link to menu. Please note change to starting place, now The Beacon, Wantage. We'll follow familiar roads through Childrey and Uffington then past Great Coxwell, Coleshill and through Highworth before looping round to the lakes at Whelford/Fairford where we'll have lunch at the Magic beans cafe at 34 miles. The cafe overlooks the lake and has both indoor and outdoor seating. The cafe has asked us to pre-order the food so they can serve us promptly and altogether. The link to the menu is below. We'll then go through Fyfield, Thrupp, up Littleworth Hill before crossing the A420 and back through Charney and Grove to Wantage. 61.5 miles (98.4km - so there might have to be a slight detour added in somewhere to get to 100km!) and 700m of climbing so a reasonable ride that shouldn't be too tough, no matter what the weather is like. A new cafe (to me) to try, they do a range of lunchtime food and the menu can be found on the website below: https://www.magicbeanscafe.co.uk/about-us/ As the cafe has asked us to pre-order, please can you let me know for certain if you're coming and your menu choice by Friday 19th August. |

Report:The weather was a bit humid to start with but it soon turned into a good temperature for cycling. The cafe - Magic Beans cafe - was a new one to the group and is highly recommended. There was lots of room, a good menu and good, friendly service. They had asked us to send in our order beforehand for a large (8-10) group, but found just 4 no trouble.Good scenery and a great group to cycle with. | ||

Riders:Barry StantonCarin Tranter Chris Marchant David Bridge Karl Blake Roger Postbeschild Sally Bensoussis Stephanie Haddrell Terry Ryland Riders = 9 Report:A refreshing morning after the oppressive heat of late, we set out in a fine mist with little wind and grateful hearts. It was great to have a group of 9 for the Thursday 2* and so lovely to see Terry, and Sally! We started at a steady pace and stopped at Goosey Green for a safety talk, slippery roads were becoming an issue as the rain continued. An uneventful ride to the edge of Fernham where we stopped to gather our breath before the only major hill of the day, after some insubordination in the ranks we headed off up the hill avoiding the cones. All managed very well although Carin had a minor mechanical which Karl kindly attended to. We can always rely on the Modern Cyclist! As we enjoyed the decent towards Little Coxwell the heavens opened, and whilst we all got rather wet, no-one complained, as they were too eager to get to the cafe. Faringdon town centre closed to cars but we were able to ride to the cafe door and thankfully they had seating for all in the back room. A very leisurely stop with great coffee, bajis, pastries and the usual banter whilst we waited for the rain to stop..... It didn't so we cracked on getting further drenched as we made our way along the A417 to the Hatford turn. From here we headed back to Grove via Charney Basset and denchworth. A very pleasant morning for the ducks and the gardens, and crazy cyclists! Thanks for the company and a lovely morning. | ||

Bank Holiday Oxford Urban Safari 1* ride (north) | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:30 pm |
Start Location:Seacourt Park and Ride OX2 0HP |
Description:NB: please contact me to pre-book your place. Booking is open!A very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside and canalside paths and quiet streets to do a 17 mile 'urban safari' around Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is almost entirely traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Parking is at the Seacourt Park and Ride on the Botley Road (bring 2 pounds in coins or pay by card). Note there is a 2m height restriction on the entrance so let me know in advance if you have bikes on a roof rack for further instructions. I suggest parking in the newly opened far side of the car park, beyond the waiting room/ticket machine area - plenty of space and a nice car free exit. We use the separated bike track on Botley Road to get to Osney, then up the river, across Port Meadow to the canal, up to Wolvercote and then through the exclusive back streets of leafy Summertown until we get to the Marston Ferry Road. Then there is a fascinating series of hidden tracks and roads through to the Oxford Brookes University campus (including an unexpected manor house), a swoop down to Florence Park and a final section of beautiful riverside towpath. Some of the tracks will be rough in places, but all bikes should be OK. Really interesting - don't miss it! 17 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph. |

Report:Small turnout for tonight - may be that holiday season affects the numbers(!).The "billed" ride for tonight would have meant passing the pub early on, but having to double back..... Well - you cannot dangle a carrot tantalisingly out of reach, so a cunning little "reverse" of the route was the order, so that the pub was timed more sensibly.. Then - throwing in a short cut "at the start" for a change - meant we arrived at the pub even sooner. Very pleasant skirting Wantage - to East Challow and across the top to Childrey on what was a glorious evening. Paused by the Childrey pond, or should we say "ditch" as not much water around, before curling down via West Challow and across to Denchworth for that watering hole - enjoying drinks or meal as chosen, where we were joined by others. Thanks all for a lovely ride. | ||

Report:A beautiful summer evening clear skies and views across the countryside, made better only by great company. We headed out via the cycle path to Charlton, and along the footpath to Lockinge. As we went through Locking and Ginge the roads were quiet, I think all of the cars were stuck in traffic! We then went via the cycle path and up to the Ridgeway, a challenging climb with pot holes to be avoided, the view at the top was spectacular and the descent thoroughly enjoyable. We then returned via the new cyclepath, over the bridge of doom, through Ardington and back to grove via Laines Barn. A relaxed 16m route back to Old Mill Hall where we ended the ride. David and I then made our way to the Fox to meet the other groups, and enjoyed a fine Steak pie!A lovely evening, thanks to all for the company and to James for the beers! | ||
