Easy on a Sunday morning Off Road Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Regular off-road rides for 2018 we are toning these down and keeping them closer to Wantage.Free parking at The Beacon, and meet at Wantage Market Place, by King Alfred. The rides will be 15-20 miles, on quiet local tracks through the woods, and maybe up to the Ridgeway. Pace equivalent to 2*, best on a mountain bike, but a cyclocross bike and if dry a robust hybrid will be fine. Call/email Robin if you would like to know more. |
||
Report:Feelin' hot hot hot!That was the weather for today's ride and we kept the pace low and looked for shade at every place we could for a drink break. Our route up to the Ridgeway was up Lark Hill, then along the gallops and through Bitham Wood with a final climb past the monument to Baron Wantage. Then we headed west along the top of the ridge, soaking in the sun and the views. When we got to Sparsholt Field we turned right and down the entertaining track, washed out in a few places. Then it was a road section to Childrey and along the canal to Grove. Clare peeled off at this point, and the remainder of us took the cyclepath back to Wantage, and started looking for a cold drink! | ||

The bridelway section is about 1.5km long and is rideable on anything other than the narrow racing tyres. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

We spotted Hares haring around the fields and as Martyn told us about the combine harvester that set fire to a field, he carefully lit his pipe! Quite a headwind in place but that just kept us cool.Thanks to everyone for coming and Ursula for sweeping, hope you all enjoyed the evening too. | ||

May be hilly.Last week's ride up White Horse Hill was a warm up for a Court Hill ascent this week, and then a few more hills... culminating in an exhilarating Chain Hill descent. NB *** I have amended this route 1/07/18 at 1pm, after a recce this morning I found I had routed us down a footpath in Brightwalton! Please could any ride leaders joining the ride download the route in case we need to split the ride, it has a lot of turns and some of the roads may be less familiar. |

Riders:Andy CowanDarran Milne Frank Schroer Iain Kent Nick Stokell Paul Jarvis Richard Hypher Riders = 7 Weather:Report:7 riders enjoyed the increasingly quiet roads instead of Kane & co in Russia, with the ride leader being able to just get to the end of School Lane in time to meet the group leaving (due to work commitments & the A417 roadworks not helping).Initially flat section into nagging headwind via A338 ,with Hanneys and Garford detour, onto Marcham and the first passage of Cothill via Black Horse Lane. Route then lead through Dry Sandford & Wootton (with the only slight GPS induced reading mishap of the ride) onto the climb through Old Boar's Hill with some nice views of the spires of Oxford in the sunshine in the distance as reward. From there we bombed down Foxcombe road followed by the brilliant section of new (and mostly downhill!) road past Bagley Wood that I think everyone enjoyed and a loop through Kennington with the dragging incline to the bridge over the A34 & onto Bayworth. That lead us to the pretty much the last (and challenging) hill of the day to set us up for another downhill section of Foxcombe road & Fox Lane. After that we finally got the advantage of some tail wind which helped us past Honeybottom Lane , Cothill (again), past the Doghouse pub and Tubney . About a half mile section of the A420 with more wind assistance to the Fyfield Wick turn lead us to a fast blast to Charney Bassett where Paul (briefly, sorry) found fast legs. From there it was back via Denchworth with hardly contested dash & home where some may still have watched the end of the game ? | ||

3* Saturday Half Day Ride to Lechlade | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.This is a generally flat ride out to Southrop just West of Lechlade visiting some of the country lanes and villages in the area. We head out via Buckland, Bampton and Langford returning through Lechlade (tea stop at 39 kim), Coleshill, Faringdon and Fernham. NOTE - AFTERNOON RIDE! |
||
Report:With the England game on as well as Steve's county boundary ride it was no surprise that there were only four of us, but we enjoyed unbroken sunshine, a cooling breeze and unusually quiet roads.The consensus was for a stop at the café by the river rather than the garden centre and we almost had the place to ourselves (strangely) - café latte/tea 50/50 split, a couple of disappointing flapjacks (and a perfectly satisfactory ice cream). After Badbury Clumps Chris began to suffer from the heat, partially treated by the news from youngsters at Fernham that England were 1-0 up at half time. At the Goosey turn-off Nick left the three of us as we headed straight back to Wantage. Thanks guys for a very pleasant afternoon and kudos to Nick for notching up 100 km by leaving his car at home - and burning off a good few tapas. | ||

Oxfordshire County Boundary (200-mile) Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:3:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Update 4/7 - we are currently 7. If you fancy joining us, please let Steve know asap. NOTE change to start time to 3:30pm to give us more slack to make the Pear Tree for dinner.The big one! A complete circuit of the Oxfordshire county boundary, roughly following the old Oxfordshire Cycleway, taking about 24 hours. The culmination of the Oxfordshire couch-to-200 miles series of rides. It's a varied route, setting off through the Vale, crossing the Thames valley and then the Cotswolds, before the rolling country of the ironstone country on our first century. After a flatter morning ride crossing eastern Oxforshire and Otmoor, we scale the Chilterns after breakfast before dropping to Streatley and a final push home across the vale. As on the recent 100 and 125-mile rides we will ride at a steady pace with regular stops to eat, drink and recover. It is a hilly route and we will regroup and rest when we need to. Below is the revised route, with planned stops, every 20-30 miles or so: Burford (Cake Stop, riverside car park) 31m Hook Norton (pub meal, Pear Tree Inn) 54m Banbury (McDonalds 24 hour, rest stop/meal) 81m Cherwell Valley Services (Meal) 100m Bicester (24hr Service station - coffee and rest) 124m Thame (Spreadeagle, breakfast) 149m Streatley (Boat Cafe, lunch) 177m We'll cycle about 50 miles (4 hrs or so) in the dark, so good lights that will last through the night are required. It will be warm during the days but it's looking perfect for night riding, with temperatures dropping only to the mid-teens early morning. No rain and light breezes that may follow us round Please ensure you have the gear/clothing/sun cream/emergency rations for 24 hours of riding. There is no organised back-up on this ride. We'll hope to see the sunrise (04:54) somewhere around Mixbury at 110 miles. |
||
Report:The longest ride and the longest day in the saddle for all of us. A great achievement and a real feat of endurance in the heat, of which everyone can feel justly proud. Full report and pictures to come. | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. The past couple of 2*rides have been flat, so I thought I'd some gentle hills this time, which will be taken at a gentle pace, with plenty of rests to regroup and get our breath!Flat initially and then climbing up through Sparsholt to Sparshot firs, before returning via the Letcombes At only 26k (16 miles) it is shorter than the typical 2*, but will be good to tak our time and admire the views from the hills |

First part of ride was flat out through Denchworth, then a short stretch of A417 before we started out gentle warm up climb to Sparsholt, as we crossed the B road it was possible to see how the road snakes up the hill side towards the radio mast at the top. Climb was gentle at first, then got steeper as we ascended through the trees where it was shady. Everyone managed the climb without any issues, at last I assume they did as I’d postered along at the back on that stretch and everyone seemed recovered and admiring the views by the time I got to the top we then enjoyed the descent down hackpen hill before undulating through the Letcombes and returning to grove around 8:15 | ||

Start Location:OMH |
Description:Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.A ride at the easier end of 2* with some off-road sections. For a change of direction, we'll head eastwards to explore the recent developments around the Harwell campus and onto Blewbury garden centre for coffee at the StyleAcre cafe. Out to Harwell via Wantage and NCN544 we'll then loop through the Hagbournes, Blewbury and Upton before returning to Harwell. There is some flexibility of route back, depending on how hot it is and the need for shade - the route attached shows the longest. We can decide on the day. Aiming to be back in Grove before 1:30pm. Several section of the route are stony in places and may not suit thinnest road tyres, but tourers and hybrids will be fine. |

The temperature had eased off nicely so it was very pleasant in the evening sunshine.A warm welcome to Jan's brother Paul on his first ride with us, a sterling effort! Plenty of time for pauses to enjoy the scenery, and villages of Goosey, West Hanney and Lyford (and of course Denchworth!) Plus, enjoyment of some very smooth roads in the latter part of the ride (ie "pre pot-hole" roads) The original estimate of 12 miles was picked up on (does the leader not get away with anything?) as it turned out to be 14 miles (the leader suspected it would - honest!) Riders:Carin TranterClare Hazell Des Higgs Jason Hopkins John Tranter Karl Blake Lorna Swanton Natalie Lower Paul Bentley Phillip Folkes Steve Swanton Val Smith Riders = 12 Weather:Report:A lovely sunny but slightly cooler evening for a longer 2* ride. We made steady progress through Denchworth and Lyford and we were approaching Southmoor when Phil realised he had a puncture. Karl stepped in with the magic sealant spray and we were soon on our way again.Our route took us across the A420 on foot on the footpath between the two ends of Draycott Road and we had a brief delay while everyone negotiated the crossing safely. But we were soon on the Appleton road heading north-eastwards with the breeze and sun behind us. At Appleton, Phil realised that the puncture fix had failed and so we had slightly longer rest stop while the inner tube was replaced - thanks to Karl for further assistance. Then the exciting bit of the ride, cyling down to the A420 and crossing on the cyclepath just west of the Tubney Wood roundabout, which then plunges through the Woods emerging in the Ridejust off the A338. We split into groups of 4 for the mile or so ride down the A338 before turning off into Tubney by the golf course. The evening light was just beautiful at this point From Tubney, we took the tunnel under the A420 through to Fyfield and then it was back over the A420 again towards Charney Bassett. At this point 4 riders decided they needed to get home more quickly and sped ahead, while the rest of us carried on more gently. By the time we approached Charney, the sun was low and there was a distinct chill in the air and so lights were lit and layers donned. We were back in Grove just before sunset at 9pm. Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This year sees our cycling club reach its 25th anniversary.To mark the event a series of rides will leave Old Mill Hall and convene at The Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall in Uffington for a celebratory Coffee Tea and Cake fest before cycling back to Grove. The 1* route will be a leisurely tour of the Vale heading out to Uffington via Charney Bassett, Hatford and Fernham before joining the throng for tea at 3pm. We'll return via Baulking and Goosey with just a short stretch along the A417 on the way home. A round trip of about 21 miles, with several stops to enjoy our picturesque surroundings along the way. As the forecast is hot, do slap on the sun cream and have a drink with you. As ever, families very welcome, but children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. |

A warm welcome to Lizzie and the Legate family on their first ride with us and welcome back to Eve (a former Oxfordshire DA Secretary) and Neil, a fellow co-founder of the club. With riders of all ages, long-standing and new, it seemed a very fitting way to be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of our amazing club.We followed the route as planned, out through Denchworth, Charney and Gainfield to Hatford and Fernham, splitting into smaller groups so that everyone could come at their own pace and stopping regularly to regroup. Given the heat it was important to keep drinking. We stopped at the top of the hill at Fernham to admire the view of the White Horse before swooping down into Uffington. Amazingly, we arrived at the hall at the same time as the 2* and 3* groups! A really nice moment, all to be arriving together. A convivial tea was enjoyed by all - many thanks to Chris for the drinks and cakes. After a few words to mark the occasion and a group photo, it was soon time to head back - more direct through Baulking and Goosey and everyone did really well. Thanks everyone for your company on a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. It's hard to believe that it is really 25 years since 18 riders gathered beneath King Alfred's statue for the first Regular Wantage Ride which marked the start of our club. May the next 25 years be just as much fun! | ||

In great weather we rode through Letcombe and up Holbourn hill. Apart from being warned to keep in by a horse rider and a car trying to pass when there was another car coming in the opposite direction we were fine. We got up Hackpen hill ahead of schedule which took the pressure off us but we still managed to reach Lambourne 15 minutes later.Then the great ride up the Lambourne valley towards Ashbury. We realised we had time for a good break at the top of Ashbury hill and still managed to get back along the Portway to Uffington arriving 5 minutes early. Everybody seemed to make their own way back in their home time. | ||

We decided to split the group into two for safety purposes. Kath very kindly offered to lead the second group. Terry & Yvonne kindly volunteered to sweep for us. Thank you to all three of you for your supportWe had a very pleasant ride through Sparsholt & Westcot. Dragon Hill proved to be a tuff climb,with the heat for all of us who's silly idea was this Well done to everyone, especially David Lynch on his first climb up Dagon Hill. Unfortunately I had two separate reports of car drivers being antisocial some of our riders were cut up whilst climbing Dragon Hill, also John V was verbally abused by another car driver at the top of the hill This incident had no relevance to our group! Well done to John for dealing with the situation in such a calm manner!! After we had caught our breath & taken a selfie or two, thank you Andy. We pushed on to Ashbury & Shivenham via the foot bridge, where we all had to dismount & push our bikes over. Then it was a nice flat ride through Longcot & Fernham with a nice view of The White Horse. As we arrived in Uffington, we met up with the 1 & 2 * groups which made perfect timing. A big thank you to all of you, for all your support, & for being such a very friendly & a perfect group to lead | ||

Description:This year sees our cycling club reach its' 25 years anniversary.To mark the event a series of rides will leave Old Mill Hall and convene at The Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall in Uffington for a celebratory Coffee Tea and Cake fest before cycling back to Grove. ***Bring some £ for a) cake and b) special edition commemorative bidon (water bottle)*** and a spare bottle cage on your bike to put it in 😉 It's all about the Cake, so with that in mind the 4* ride departs a tad earlier than the others in order to ensure there is sufficient cake left on our arrival at Uffington ca. 3pm. Please Note 12:45 departure OMH for 4* : 56km / 650m "up". Aiming for a +25kph ride average, so flat cruising around 30kph and the drops at..... Hills a-plenty though, so it'll be a good workout. It's a distinctly lumpy ride, starting straight from the gun up Manor Road. A regroupment is likely on cresting, but from there a tight formation will be maintained down through Great Shefford and beyond into corrugated narrow lanes South of the M4. From Aldbourne the gradients ease into a steady drag to crest Foxhill and a routine swoop along through "the 'stones' to reach Ashbury and a final drop down through the curves at Woolstone to reach the Hidden Bounty at Uffington. Inclement weather can be accommodated with a shortened but still Southerly route. To allow for unhindered tea-taking and DIY routing homeward from Uffington, we'll end the led ride there. |
||
Riders:Frank SchroerJason Jones Jerry Bird Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Richard Hypher Richard Saunders Riders = 8 Report:A fine afternoon, light breezes and steadily increasing temperatures, humidity (and flies!) brought out a great group to venture South of the M4 into the maze of quiet lanes that characterise North Wessex downland.Starting with a romp up Manor was tough but got the worst grunt of the ride out of the way early on. In typical 4* fashion, the group grew as we progressed - starting at OMH with 5, we had swollen to 8 by the top of Manor as Frank and Pete continued their morning ~100km gravel ride with some CUK for "afters" - a commendable effort chaps. We managed a steady rate of progress over some challenging terrain, sharing the wind throughout and enjoying a good natter too. Arriving a little after 3pm we just about found sufficient cake and tea available after the earlier grazers had enjoyed themselves, but hey - that's what keeps us lean and mean 4*s Thanks all for being such a great bunch - "no stress leading" was perfect for a celebratory ride. Off Road ride at a gentle pace, trying not to get too muddy before the celebratory cakes! |
||
Riders:Andy CowanDavid Brown David Yearley Jerry Pride Robin Tucker Stan Cowan Riders = 6 Weather:Report:A few of us with baggy shorts and knobbly tyres gathered in a sea of lycra for the Anniversary ride on a very sunny Saturday 21st July. The only rain for weeks had dried from the roads, and we were a bit worried what it had done to the Ridgeway. Fortunately, it had just left a few puddles to dodge - the rest had soaked in or dried up already.We started off along the canal path to Challow, then up Windmill Hill and over to Letcombe, and up again on the testing Gramps Hill. That was the big climbing done and we rolled along the top of the ridge in the sun at a steady pace. We met Karl, waiting for the 2* ride as we crossed the A338, and then took advantage of one of the water taps to refill bottles. Unusually a horse and cart part-blocked one the preferred side-track just after this, so we continued down the chalky main. Then after the final climb of White Horse Hill we had time for a few pictures before an interesting off-road descent, and then 2 road descents - one to the B-road, and one to Woolstone. As Andy commented, fat off-road tyres and disc brakes give you a confidence on pot-holed descents that you don't always feel on a road bike. The last mile to Uffington wasn't exactly a team time trial, but we were keen to get to the cake! After the celebrations, half of us went home by road routes, half of us headed back for the Ridgeway and even more miles! | ||

However, once up Chain Hill and into the West Berkshire countryside, I made the mistake of admitting that I was rather enjoying myself and quite sad to have to leave the ride. Having a crock knee, Jon suggested that he go home and cuddle a puppy, whilst I lead the ride ... and I fell for it!!! Actually, it was a great route with a super group of riders who got up all the hills before me and didn't once moan about having to wait. Thanks for that guys. Description:***BRIDGING RIDE***This is the third of our Bridging Ride series designed to help those who would like to progress to the next level of cycling. As such it will be ridden at the higher end of the pace range. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. This week we explore a little further to the east. Out via Charlton to Lockinge and Ginge, the permissive track across to East Hendred and then some nifty bridleways back to West Hendred and Ardington. We finish off with a little climb over to Lains Barn and the final descent back to Grove. 14 miles and we will tweak the average speed up just a little as this is a bridging ride. |

Super hot, but it didn't feel too bad as long as we kept moving.It was particularly great to welcome Bryony back after "maternity leave". It was good to see that she had taken the baby seat off the shopping bike in order to improve the aerodynamics. Just needs tri-bars now... All went according to plan as we worked our way around Wantage and out into the countryside. It quickly became clear that Di know everyone who was out getting the harvest in, and Martyn knew pretty much everyone else we came across! We met up with Steve S on his way home from work out by Ginge and then headed back on the tracks from East Hendred to West Hendred, through the churchyard, over a couple of gates/stiles (yes, the shopping bike was the heaviest) and across the fields to Ardington before the final effort over Lains Barn hill. Pretty much a perfect evening! | ||

Riders:Darran MilneFrank Schroer Jason Jones Jerry Bird Louis Hall Nick Dunton Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Richard Hypher Riders = 9 Weather:Report:9 of us set off whilst the heat of the day had not quite disappeared, taking a different route out than advertised, in order to avoid the cycle rush hour to Denchworth, via A338 & the Hanneys instead. From there we picked up the original route to Charney and Buckland. After the downhill to Buckland Marsh we took the quiet lanes to Aston, from where we headed to Bampton. Lost bottle(s ?) and a tagged on toilet break for some meant there was some traffic to deal with (bus, horse etc) which is unusual but once on our way we soon took a right turn off the main route to Black Bourton, around where everyone's bunny hopping skills were instantly tested by some (presumably) temporary covers on the road, that - with the sun in our face - did not look like much until you were riding almost on top of them ! Fortunately nobody came off on the first and several other of these we passed during the ride. Via Alvescot it was then onwards to the pretty Cotswold style villages of Broadwell and Langford from where we carried on to Little Clanfield and the A road towards Faringdon. We turned off that at the turn to Littleworth, where most of tested our legs on the only hill of significance of the ride, where Pete achieved his (apparently) only purpose of coming on the ride - beating me up it! After regrouping we rode a short stretch of A420, where a growing bunch of vehicles behind us must have been relieved that we turned off at the quiet lane to Hatford. So quiet in fact that just when some of us wanted to build up speed for the nice straight downhill two deer crossed over the road just meters in front of us, with a third one hesitating to do so as well but eventually thinking better of it luckily. Not being sure if more deer might appear we temporarily slowed down before enjoying the slight but long descent. Via Stanford, Park lane and Cow Lane it was through Denchworth before it become clear that good things come to those that wait (long enough) on the Denchworth dash. Given little climbing and only a light wind the average on this route was at the top end of the 4 star ride, but given the lead out nobody seemed to have a problem keeping up. Thanks all for joining this ride with near perfect weather. | ||

2* Saturday Half Day Ride - OXFORD SPECIAL | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:** WEATHER UPDATE - SATURDAY MORNING **It now looks like we will avoid the rain, have some pleasant temperatures but also have some strong winds. The route is fairly well sheltered, so the ride is ON! Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. By popular demand, a re-run of my very successful ride in April - this is a 2* ride that has pretty much everything! We head out via Charney Bassett and discover the nifty Southmoor footbridge - the safest way to cross the A420. Then we follow the quiet road parallel to the A420 all the way to Cumnor and swoop down Cumnor Hill to the edge of Oxford. From there we utilise a a super cunning bike-safe transit of the A420/A34 Botley junction to head north for a lovely circuit around Port Meadow before heading back into town via Wolvercote to my very own St Cross College for a VIP coffee stop. You can only get in if you are a friend of the Bursar, with catering from the fine cafes of St Giles. Then there is more fun with my most cunning bike track and riverside route out of town to the west, before the climb of Cumnor Hill. We head for home via Fyfield. At 42 miles, it is a long ride for an afternoon, but we have a few short cut options in the final section which we can use if necessary. I don't expect to be back before 5.30pm. Having said that, there are very few hills and we will stick to a steady 2* pace. |
||
Riders:Brian HipwellDavid Lynch James Bosley Jan McCabe John Tranter Karen Townsin Paul McCabe Val Smith Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Well, with all that wild weather swirling around, it was impressive to see so many people braving it. Six started out and we got some rain within the first couple of miles. Didn't last long so we were not too badly affected. Val was suffering from a rubbing and squealing disc brake and decided to turn back at Southmoor. We then had some bright and blowy weather which blew us along nicely to the edge of Oxford where we gathered up Jan and Paul. The tour of Port Meadow and the run down into town was as good as ever and we sat outside for tea and cake in the beautiful Blackwell Quad of St Cross College. After the usual tourist scrums on NCN5, we made it to the river and enjoyed the tracks back to Botley, where we said goodbye to Jan and Paul and conquered Cumnor Hill (into the wind!) And then - the heavens opened and we had a pretty tough final 10 miles into the headwind home. Drowned rats all, but all in all an enjoyable afternoon in great company! | ||

It was great to see Bryony back on her road bike, SPDs causing no unscheduled dismounts, despite her fears, and warm enough to tempt Mila out too.An annoying head-wind on the way out and a faulty valve caused a brief discussion as to whether we should cut the ride short, but a decision to revert to Plan A was rewarded with a speedy blast back to Denchworth with the wind on our backs. Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather.Optional social stop at The Fox at Denchworth at the end of the ride. |
