Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Sharon Bedford |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Beacon Car Park |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. Heading north today to just brush the edge of The Cotswolds.Ride of about 100k with 677m of climbing. We will have two stops - one at Lynwood in Carterton (43k) and a later one at Aston Pottery (76k). So one late morning and one early afternoon (as opposed to bang on lunchtime) but lots of food options at both. I've had a run of wet weather for my recent rides so keeping my fingers and toes crossed for dry weather, (but no guarantees). |

Report:We met in glorious sunshine and were able to set off a few minutes early, (despite a number of the party taking a sight seeing trip to the Market Place first). Unfortunately our timely progress was halted abruptly when my gear cable snapped as we approached Childrey. Jan kindly agreed to take over as ride leader (thank you Jan) and I waved the group goodbye as I set off to walk up Childrey Hill (why do you always get stuck in top gear). Not wanting to be left out I got home somehow, switched bikes and then took a direct route to the first coffee stop, miraculously arriving at a similar time to the group. After brunch ( tasty food and quick service today) I resumed my ride leader duties. We all agreed the next stretch was a scenic, quiet and pleasant section of the ride. We hit a headwind on the way to Aston and Barry kindly rode in front (thank you Barry). Sad to hear at Aston that the Lionesses had lost the World Cup final.🥲 After the climb of Buckland Hill we waved goodbye to Jan, and I began to slow (all the excitement from earlier catching up with me). So we divided into two groups. Andy kindly taking the group back to Wantage, (thank you Andy) with Katherine keeping me company (thank you Katherine). So I am not sure I fulfilled everything a ride leader should today, but it didn’t really matter as there was a great group spirit and lots of help and friendship. 😀 | ||
