Harlequin Hack Audax | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Uffington Village Hall, SN7 7RE |
Description:This is a really nice, relatively gentle, early season 100km Audax event which we have supported for many years.68 mile / 110km Audax event starting from Uffington. Controls at Witney, Chipping Norton and Uffington, plus 1 information control. A modest excursion into the Cotswold hills followed by a gentle wander through the watery lanes of the upper Thames, the Evenlode and the Windrush. The ride starts and ends at the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall in Uffington which has a village shop adjacent. Food and drink available at the start/finish and included in the entry fee. This will be treated as a club ride for anyone who wants to join. Note individuals will need to enter and pay for the event via Audax UK. The good news is that Cycling UK has an arrangement with Audax UK to cover the membership fee. Note that such events can get full so get your entry in as early as possible. |

Report:A challenging weather forecast was worrying all week, and a few folk pulled out (understandably) as it didn't get any better. Then heavy rain overnight and drizzle at the start was not promising. However, thanks to Andy and a welcome return for Mark, we got on with it and actually conditions on the road were not as bad as feared. We had a stiff headwind in the first half, and the section from Charlbury to Chippy was pretty brutal, but it was a great relief to turn back south and finally have the wind behind us. We had a first coffee stop at Cogges Farm and then a lovely late lunch at the Cafe de la Post in Chadlington. It has to be noted that we (and the organisers) had underestimated the degree of chaos caused by Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm Shop which happens to be right on the route. A half mile queue of cars, liquid mud everywhere, cars parking on every squelching verge - not fun. We were relieved to get through. Fortunately the ride was incident free after that and we really enjoyed the route, particularly the section from Chadlington down to Curbridge.I'm including Des on the list as he very kindly gave his time as a control marshall and also Katherine who provided the catering on behalf of Flexicare. | ||
