There were 9 of us on the outward leg to Uffington. It felt decidedly autumnal with golden tints among the trees and hedgerows as we headed out into the Vale. We stopped three times for a breather: by the walnut tree in Denchworth; outside the old school in Charney Bassett and then in Shellingford after a short detour into this pretty village. It is always nice coming this way to Fernham (as long as the headwind isn't too strong) to enjoy the views across to the Downs; the panorama towards the white horse as we descended into Uffington was as stunning as ever.We arrived at St Mary's church to find Tim, Jan and her brother Paul plus Sue King and Pat Hurt (club old-timers) enjoying teas/coffees and cakes in the sunshine. It was great to see you all. John arrived shortly after having taken his own route to ascend White Horse Hill. Numbers swelled to 12 for the return, with a nice tail wind to assist us. Jan and Paul rode with us as far as the A417 before turning off towards Stanford. Our leisurely ride back was briefly disturbed by a near miss with an overtaking car. Fortunately, there was no further incident for the rest of the ride. However, we did pause for some impromtu horse petting just after Asti Equestrian. We were back in Grove at 5:15. Thanks to Nick for sweeping and all for your company on a very mellow afternoon. | ||
