3* Saturday Half Day Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.PLEASE NOTE THIS RIDE STARTS FROM WANTAGE MARKET PLACE. It seems only right that in our anniversary year we do one of Henks rides. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, I have heard enough about him from others to know he was a splendid crafter of rides and this was one of his best. The route has been tweaked slightly from last year to replicate Henks original. Out through the Letcombes, on to Lambourn, a delightful wiggle to Hungerford before going over the Common to Kintbury. We'll return via Boxford and the Downs and the delightful swoop down Chainhill and back to Wantage. 65km with just over 600metres of climbing. We'll have a tea stop at either the Tutti Pole at Hungerford or Saddleback. |

Although the market place was busy, the 14 of us did not cause chaos as we gathered. A steady pace saw us up on the Ridgeway at Sparsholt Firs. The views as lovely as ever and then a slightly constrained swoop down to Lambourn with the only real headwind of the ride. We said goodbye to Des as we wiggled through Lambourn, cutting off the corner. We didn't stop for tea at Terry and Jennys, despite passing close to their front door and then another climb out of Eastbury. There are some lovely roads up above the Lambourn Valley. Once we arrived in Hungerford, we took Terry's advice and used the new café in the reclamation centre as you enter Hungerford. A good choice, good cakes and very efficient service as well as a pleasant table shaded by trees - who can ask for more . The Common to Kintbury is always a winner and once I was guided to the right road, we meandered our way back down to the canal, saying goodbye to Nicole and Richard on the way. The A4 was quiet as we crossed it and we managed the interesting lane down to the Boxford road without incident. A mechanical before the Ridgeway villages left Chris without a freewheel but he managed the rest of the ride without further issues. Before long we were saying goodbye to Jenny and Terry and then it was the glorious return to Wantage via Chain Hill. Thanks to Richard P and Terry for doing sweep duty and to everyone for contributing to a great afternoons cycling. | ||
