---|
Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.Middle of Grade anti-clockwise circuit of about 100 km with 900m of climbing, mostly in the first half and none very sustained, taking quiet lanes where possible. After a fast run down to Lambourn we head East along to Boxford then take scenic lanes over to Snelsmore Common and onto Hermitage for an early lunch at Hillier's Garden Centre. After lunch we pass through Yattendon and Upper Basildon and on to Goring. After a brief encounter with the Chilterns we will head back via Wallingford (tea stop), Appleford and Drayton. |

Report:By 0930 Wantage market square was awash with 50 – 60 cyclists. But major logistical difficulties were avoided – all except three were off on a ride to Winchester! (www.hyde900.org.uk/2015/03/23/w2w-2015). (It always amazes me how I manage to avoid the publicity surrounding local events). So three of us set out with far more serious intentions than a paltry 53 mile ride to King Alfred’s final resting place. Three soon became two as Joy decided she would be holding the group up and headed off to do a local loop instead. If we had had a few more riders she might have been persuaded to continue, but it turned out to be a harder ride than I predicted be due to the brisk wind. So Louis and I did the ride in beautiful weather and enjoyed the extensive views - the section between Boxford and Snelsmore is particularly recommended. We opted for a quick bun and tea stop at Hermitage before heading on towards Goring. The clouds threatened as we worked our way along the minor roads through Ipsden and down to Crowmarsh, but the sun reasserted itself as we sat outside Bean & Brew at Wallingford (Recommended) for a well-earned cakestop. On the way out of Wallingford we picked up another rider, Kieran, making his way from Hertfordshire to Bath and showed him a much more pleasant (though quite a bit longer) route back to Wantage. Taking turns at leading into the wind we made rapid progress back to the market square. | ||
