Riders:David BridgeDavid Jackson Des Higgs John Tranter LeeAnn Norris Mila Yearley Paul Bentley Stephanie Haddrell Val Smith Riders = 9 Report:Good to see a new rider in Lee Ann. nut we had to leave without Karl Blake so then there were 9. In great weather we rode through Letcombe and up Holbourn hill. Apart from being warned to keep in by a horse rider and a car trying to pass when there was another car coming in the opposite direction we were fine. We got up Hackpen hill ahead of schedule which took the pressure off us but we still managed to reach Lambourne 15 minutes later. Then the great ride up the Lambourne valley towards Ashbury. We realised we had time for a good break at the top of Ashbury hill and still managed to get back along the Portway to Uffington arriving 5 minutes early. Everybody seemed to make their own way back in their home time.

Riders:Andy CowanDavid Brown David Yearley Jerry Pride Robin Tucker Stan Cowan Riders = 6 Weather:Report:A few of us with baggy shorts and knobbly tyres gathered in a sea of lycra for the Anniversary ride on a very sunny Saturday 21st July. The only rain for weeks had dried from the roads, and we were a bit worried what it had done to the Ridgeway. Fortunately, it had just left a few puddles to dodge - the rest had soaked in or dried up already. We started off along the canal path to Challow, then up Windmill Hill and over to Letcombe, and up again on the testing Gramps Hill. That was the big climbing done and we rolled along the top of the ridge in the sun at a steady pace. We met Karl, waiting for the 2* ride as we crossed the A338, and then took advantage of one of the water taps to refill bottles. Unusually a horse and cart part-blocked one the preferred side-track just after this, so we continued down the chalky main. Then after the final climb of White Horse Hill we had time for a few pictures before an interesting off-road descent, and then 2 road descents - one to the B-road, and one to Woolstone. As Andy commented, fat off-road tyres and disc brakes give you a confidence on pot-holed descents that you don't always feel on a road bike. The last mile to Uffington wasn't exactly a team time trial, but we were keen to get to the cake! After the celebrations, half of us went home by road routes, half of us headed back for the Ridgeway and even more miles!

Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Lynch David Smith Eddie Little James McGuigan Jenny Gower Jo Little John Vandore Jon Townsin Joy Arthur Julie Haynes Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Nigel Hughes Sharon Bedford Simon Atkin Terry Penn Ursula Hallam Yvonne Bird Riders = 19 Weather:Report:A wonderful group of nineteen riders gathered for the 25thAnniversary. We decided to split the group into two for safety purposes. Kath very kindly offered to lead the second group. Terry & Yvonne kindly volunteered to sweep for us. Thank you to all three of you for your supportWe had a very pleasant ride through Sparsholt & Westcot. Dragon Hill proved to be a tuff climb, with the heat for all of us who's silly idea was this Well done to everyone, especially David Lynch on his first climb up Dagon Hill. Unfortunately I had two separate reports of car drivers being antisocial some of our riders were cut up whilst climbing Dragon Hill, also John V was verbally abused by another car driver at the top of the hill This incident had no relevance to our group! Well done to John for dealing with the situation in such a calm manner!! After we had caught our breath & taken a selfie or two, thank you Andy. We pushed on to Ashbury & Shivenham via the foot bridge, where we all had to dismount & push our bikes over. Then it was a nice flat ride through Longcot & Fernham with a nice view of The White Horse. As we arrived in Uffington, we met up with the 1 & 2 * groups which made perfect timing. A big thank you to all of you, for all your support, & for being such a very friendly & a perfect group to lead

Description:This year sees our cycling club reach its' 25 years anniversary. To mark the event a series of rides will leave Old Mill Hall and convene at The Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall in Uffington for a celebratory Coffee Tea and Cake fest before cycling back to Grove. ***Bring some £ for a) cake and b) special edition commemorative bidon (water bottle)*** and a spare bottle cage on your bike to put it in 😉 It's all about the Cake, so with that in mind the 4* ride departs a tad earlier than the others in order to ensure there is sufficient cake left on our arrival at Uffington ca. 3pm. Please Note 12:45 departure OMH for 4* : 56km / 650m "up". Aiming for a +25kph ride average, so flat cruising around 30kph and the drops at..... Hills a-plenty though, so it'll be a good workout. It's a distinctly lumpy ride, starting straight from the gun up Manor Road. A regroupment is likely on cresting, but from there a tight formation will be maintained down through Great Shefford and beyond into corrugated narrow lanes South of the M4. From Aldbourne the gradients ease into a steady drag to crest Foxhill and a routine swoop along through "the 'stones' to reach Ashbury and a final drop down through the curves at Woolstone to reach the Hidden Bounty at Uffington. Inclement weather can be accommodated with a shortened but still Southerly route. To allow for unhindered tea-taking and DIY routing homeward from Uffington, we'll end the led ride there. |

Riders:Frank SchroerJason Jones Jerry Bird Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Richard Hypher Richard Saunders Riders = 8 Report:A fine afternoon, light breezes and steadily increasing temperatures, humidity (and flies!) brought out a great group to venture South of the M4 into the maze of quiet lanes that characterise North Wessex downland.Starting with a romp up Manor was tough but got the worst grunt of the ride out of the way early on. In typical 4* fashion, the group grew as we progressed - starting at OMH with 5, we had swollen to 8 by the top of Manor as Frank and Pete continued their morning ~100km gravel ride with some CUK for "afters" - a commendable effort chaps. We managed a steady rate of progress over some challenging terrain, sharing the wind throughout and enjoying a good natter too. Arriving a little after 3pm we just about found sufficient cake and tea available after the earlier grazers had enjoyed themselves, but hey - that's what keeps us lean and mean 4*s Thanks all for being such a great bunch - "no stress leading" was perfect for a celebratory ride. Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This year sees our cycling club reach its 25th anniversary. To mark the event a series of rides will leave Old Mill Hall and convene at The Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall in Uffington for a celebratory Coffee Tea and Cake fest before cycling back to Grove. The 1* route will be a leisurely tour of the Vale heading out to Uffington via Charney Bassett, Hatford and Fernham before joining the throng for tea at 3pm. We'll return via Baulking and Goosey with just a short stretch along the A417 on the way home. A round trip of about 21 miles, with several stops to enjoy our picturesque surroundings along the way. As the forecast is hot, do slap on the sun cream and have a drink with you. As ever, families very welcome, but children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. |

Riders:Carin TranterChloe Legate Diana Whidborne Eve Thornton Laura Legate Lizzie Long Lorna Swanton Mandy Wassell Matthew Legate Natasha Legate Neil Warner Paul Penfold Rachel Legate Steve Boreham Steve Legate Steve Swanton Riders = 16 Weather:Report:A lovely afternoon's riding and great to see some old friends and welcome some new faces. A warm welcome to Lizzie and the Legate family on their first ride with us and welcome back to Eve (a former Oxfordshire DA Secretary) and Neil, a fellow co-founder of the club. With riders of all ages, long-standing and new, it seemed a very fitting way to be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of our amazing club.We followed the route as planned, out through Denchworth, Charney and Gainfield to Hatford and Fernham, splitting into smaller groups so that everyone could come at their own pace and stopping regularly to regroup. Given the heat it was important to keep drinking. We stopped at the top of the hill at Fernham to admire the view of the White Horse before swooping down into Uffington. Amazingly, we arrived at the hall at the same time as the 2* and 3* groups! A really nice moment, all to be arriving together. A convivial tea was enjoyed by all - many thanks to Chris for the drinks and cakes. After a few words to mark the occasion and a group photo, it was soon time to head back - more direct through Baulking and Goosey and everyone did really well. Thanks everyone for your company on a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. It's hard to believe that it is really 25 years since 18 riders gathered beneath King Alfred's statue for the first Regular Wantage Ride which marked the start of our club. May the next 25 years be just as much fun!
