Tuesday evening 1* Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Boreham |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Belated details of ride tonight: "Loopy" - Ride out to Goosey, via Asti Stud, then curl back via the Charney Road to West Hanney, then up the smoothest road in the county, before looping round to Lyford, and back via Denchworth.Total of around 14 miles, with the sun shining! Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Riders:Diana WhidborneJan McCabe John Hogston Martyn Wigmore Paul McCabe Steve Boreham Riders = 6 Weather:Report:Fairly small group on what was a glorious evening for cycling. The temperature had eased off nicely so it was very pleasant in the evening sunshine.A warm welcome to Jan's brother Paul on his first ride with us, a sterling effort! Plenty of time for pauses to enjoy the scenery, and villages of Goosey, West Hanney and Lyford (and of course Denchworth!) Plus, enjoyment of some very smooth roads in the latter part of the ride (ie "pre pot-hole" roads) The original estimate of 12 miles was picked up on (does the leader not get away with anything?) as it turned out to be 14 miles (the leader suspected it would - honest!) Clouds had gathered early on but no rain - but we played "spot the green grass" with a little success.... Thanks to all for making the ride relaxed, and thanks to Martyn for sweeping. | ||

Riders:Carin TranterClare Hazell Des Higgs Jason Hopkins John Tranter Karl Blake Lorna Swanton Natalie Lower Paul Bentley Phillip Folkes Steve Swanton Val Smith Riders = 12 Weather:Report:A lovely sunny but slightly cooler evening for a longer 2* ride. We made steady progress through Denchworth and Lyford and we were approaching Southmoor when Phil realised he had a puncture. Karl stepped in with the magic sealant spray and we were soon on our way again. Our route took us across the A420 on foot on the footpath between the two ends of Draycott Road and we had a brief delay while everyone negotiated the crossing safely. But we were soon on the Appleton road heading north-eastwards with the breeze and sun behind us. At Appleton, Phil realised that the puncture fix had failed and so we had slightly longer rest stop while the inner tube was replaced - thanks to Karl for further assistance. Then the exciting bit of the ride, cyling down to the A420 and crossing on the cyclepath just west of the Tubney Wood roundabout, which then plunges through the Woods emerging in the Ridejust off the A338. We split into groups of 4 for the mile or so ride down the A338 before turning off into Tubney by the golf course. The evening light was just beautiful at this point From Tubney, we took the tunnel under the A420 through to Fyfield and then it was back over the A420 again towards Charney Bassett. At this point 4 riders decided they needed to get home more quickly and sped ahead, while the rest of us carried on more gently. By the time we approached Charney, the sun was low and there was a distinct chill in the air and so lights were lit and layers donned. We were back in Grove just before sunset at 9pm. Thanks to everyone for your company and to Des and Karl tfor sweeping duties. | ||
