Tuesday evening 1* Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This week across the club we have the first of our series of Bridging Rides designed to help those who would like to progress to the next riding level on a Tuesday evening. So our ride this week will be at the hillier end of the 1* range, designed to practice our climbing skills. This will be a followed by an easier 2* ride next week for those who would like to give 2* a try. This ride goes around Wantage and out to the twin villages of Letcombe Regis and Letcombe Bassett. Then there is a little hill before we swoop down to Childrey, past the duck pond and then more descending to Goosey and home. 14 miles at our usual leisurely pace. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Also - pretty nice weather which only got nicer as the evening went on.Welcome to Andrew on his first ride with us. A few silly motorists made the first couple of miles around Wantage a little stressful, but once we on the lanes through the Letcombes all was peaceful and very pleasant. The group stayed together well and the climb of Holborn Hill didn't seem to present too many difficulties. We enjoyed the swoop down through Childey and soon found ourselves heading home in a low sun. Thanks to all for a lovely evening! | ||

Tuesday Evening 2* Ride | 2* |

Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. ***BRIDGING RIDE***This is the first of our Bridging Ride series designed to help those who would like to progress to the next level of cycling. As such it will be ridden at the higher end of the pace range. So this Bridging Ride will be about hills rather than pace. Everyone I've ridden with this year on the 2* rides is more than capable of celebrating the longer evenings with a ride up White Horse Hill. We will go the most direct route, via the Childrey Bridleway and then the spring line villages. Everyone will climb at their own pace and there will be plenty of time at the top to admire the view and take photos. We'll return via Uffington, Baulking and Goosey. |

We survived the jungle that has become the bridleway to Childrey - at times you could barely see the path. Maybe give it a miss until the autumn!Having made it to the bottom of White Horse Hill without incident, we all made our way up at our own pace and as ever the view opening up as we ascended was sublime . The sun came out as we reached the top and took time to admire the glorious vista of the Vale of White Horse. We all made it down without incident and Karl played lollipop man, making sure everyone crossed the road safely. We said goodbye to Brian as he took the more direct route back Some stretched their legs on the Baulking road and then we were back in Grove and got swept up by the returning 3* riders. A lovely ride, thank you all and especially all those that took a turn sweeping - Karl, Des, Steve and Gareth. | ||

Tuesday Evening Off Road Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:David Yearley |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Report:Firstly, a big welcome to Bruce who joins us for the first time.Tonight's ride was on good, dry tracks which offered good grip and speed. We went out to Wantage via Crab Hill, which still presents rutty problems in places, before heading East towards Lockinge, via the bridle path at the bottom of Lark Hill. From there we took the low lying tracks to Chilton and climbed to the Ridgeway from there. A quick blast along the Ridgeway Westwards saw us at the top of the point to point course in good time for a fast descent back to Lockinge, via Knights Drop and to the Nelson for dinner and a pint. | ||

Leader:Frank Schroer |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly. Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly. With nearly 3 hours of daylight from the start time now, let's make the most of this and get a 40 mile ride in. Please take lights for the last part just in case. Flat start out to Bourton with most of the climbing towards the end of the ride. Some rarely ridden roads around Baydon where we will cross the M4 four times in short succession. Then back via Lambourn, Letcombes etc |

Riders:Andy CowanFrank Schroer Iain Kent Jason Jones Phil Ward Ruth Fisher Riders = 6 Weather:Report:On an initially dull looking evening 6 of us set off with a flat start out to Bourton with a tailwind giving us a nice pace with the ride leader mostly on the front (where they are supposed to be!).This is where the clouds slowly made way to give a sunny end of the day, just in time to give us nice sceneries opening up whilst going into the hilly part of the ride. The pace did only drop a bit on that as the group was (mostly) evenly matched tonight and hardly any waiting was required. I think everyone enjoyed the slight diversion away from the straight Foxhill - Baydon road by means of the quieter road that crosses the M4 twice and had a pleasant, quick downhill section and a tasty climb - apparently the road conditions were better than what some experienced there earlier in the year . A quick drop into Lambourn followed by the climb on the other side of Hackpen followed by another quick drop on the other side and then through the Letcombe lead us to Windmill hill and East Challow before riders (including myself) starting to make their way home in Wantage. In fact, only a few of us needed to get back to Grove and agreed to do so by themselves. 64km in total in 2h34mins with 28.5 km/h moving average by the time they got there I have been told (so perfectly in the upper end of the 4 star speed bracket - despite the hills !) A few returns need to be mentioned here, first of all Andy rode his first 4 star ride since the end of August 2016 due to what happened since and had no problem at all with following the pace despite it was one of the faster rides this year with some vertical meters as well towards the end. The other return is a road ride with a gps for myself, having been disappointed with the early generations of cycling gps's I had not bothered spending money on one for a long time but have to say I am impressed with the one I got now. | ||
