Tuesday 1* Evening Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. This week a variant of a regular Tuesday favourite. We'll be heading to Betterton, but by a slightly different route through Wantage, and with the choice of routes back at the end.... We'll join Sustrans route 544 by the Nelson and follow it through to Lockinge and climb gently up to Betterton . After stopping at the top to the hill to take in the views, we'll enjoy the lovely descent into Ardington. After touring the village , we'll climb up to the Lains Barn junction and then enjoy a second long descent passing Lains Barn back into the Vale. A round trip of 10-11 miles. We should be back before sunset, but lights are recommended. |

Report:A really enjoyable evening ride. Sometimes, there are things that you can do with a smaller group that you can't with a larger one, like getting lost (!) and tracking down a hidden gem... | ||

Leader:David Brown |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.Heading east for a change tonight. Out of Grove to the Lains Barn road and then swooping down into Ginge to experience the slightly strange set of (in my view) slightly over-perfect little villages nestling under the Ridgeway. We go along to the permissive track cutting through to the road above East Hendred, then a few yards on the A417 before cutting through Featherbed Lane to the great descent of Steventon Hill. Then the Cow Common road back across to the Hanney's and home. About 20 miles at an appropriately mellow 2* pace. |

A great group coped well, despite some unpleasant motorists on the Lains Barn road.It was remarkably easy bowling along, and the ride was despatched very efficiently. Thanks to all for coming! | ||

Riders:David SmithDavid Talboys Jenny Gower Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Mike Cooke Nick Dunton Richard Hypher Sharon Bedford Terry Penn Riders = 11 Weather:Report:Some light drizzle at the start soon dissipated and mostly this was a ride on dry roads. Challenging hills and fast descents made for an enjoyable outing. We encountered the off-road group emerging from the ridgeway at the top of Hackpen. It is a testament to the growing fitness of the three-star group that this ride was dispatched with ease. We were back by 8.15. No incidents: an entirely hassle-free ride which was a pleasure to lead. Thanks Jon for sweeping. | ||

Leader:Richard Kembleton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly.Taking a break from the (bigger) hills we'll head out through Denchworth to pass north of Stanford-in-the-Vale and then turn south-west to Shrivenham. A bit of a slog up through Bishopstone puts us on the rolling spring-line road, past the White Horse (optional detour!) and back towards Wantage, with a final jink back to Grove through Challow and Denchworth to avoid the bad roads in the centre of Wantage. 55km, target time 2 hours; please bring lights. |

Riders:Adrian WestCharlotte Ward Frank Schroer Jason Jones Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Richard Kembleton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:A reasonably-sized group, with one tandem, set out in light rain which soon cleared up, and set a decent pace out through Denchworth. For once, Frank was there from the start. It was all nice and conversational until we hit the spring line and started to climb up to Bishopstone. Adrian left us at Ashbury, having already done half the ride to get to Grove in the first place. A cheeky Dragon Hill with a fine sunset led to Jason puncturing on the final cattle grid, stymying his chance at the Dash. Paul volunteered to make his own way home soon after, and Phil and Charlotte's tandem left in Denchworth. Peter, Frank, and Rich made it to the Dash but since I still don't know where it officially ends I can't name the winner...Thanks to everyone for coming. This was my first attempt at taking photos on the bike. More practice needed... | ||
