Tuesday 1* Evening Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. This is a bridging ride at the upper level of the range to allow riders to gauge their pace and gain confidence to step up to the next star level. So, with that in mind, tonight we'll tackle Holborn Hill. We ride from Grove to Wantage and after a very short section on the B4507, we'll quickly turn off onto quieter lanes that take us through Letcombe Regis and Letcombe Bassett. We'll then climb the hill, steep but quite short, before a rewarding descent into Childrey. Then it's back along familiar roads with a very short stretch on the A417, through Goosey to Denchworth and the pub for those who'd like to stop. |

Riders:Karen TownsinMandy Wassell Martyn Wigmore Naomi Merritt Paul Penfold Steve Boreham Riders = 6 Weather:Report:Since there seemed to be a fair amount of faffing going on with the other groups, we decided to sneak away from OMH first and so were subsequently over-taken by the 3* and later the somewhat bemused 2* group wondering how we'd managed to get so far!Once we were onto the Letcombes road, the traffic disappeared and we enjoyed a lovely quiet ride through the villages. There was some trepidation around Holborn Hill, but actually everyone managed it really well and then of course we were rewarded with the downhill into Childrey. A stop by the pond was required to fix Mandy's front mud guard with the ever versatile cable tie and we were soon on our way again with another stop in Goosey to enjoy the wonderful evening light. Welcome to Martyn on his first club ride since the Betjeman and to Andrew, Paul's son, visiting from Devon. Six of the seven stopped at the Fox, entertained by the Morris/ 17th Century traditional dancers. A perfectly normal Summer evening in Denchworth! Thanks everyone for a lovely ride and don't forget that it is the second phase of the bridging rides next week, so if you fancy a slightly longer and slightly faster ride, why not join the 2* group? | ||

Tuesday 2* Evening Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. This is a bridging ride at the upper level of the range to allow riders to gauge their pace and gain confidence to step up to the next star level. Just tweaking the hill count a little after last week - this time we go out through the Letcombes to Holborn Hill and then the more significant challenge of Hackpen Hill. Once we have enjoyed the views from the top, we will also enjoy the swooping descent to the south before switching back on the Seven Barrows road for a gentle run back up to the Ridgeway. A big drop down Blowingstone Hill is followed by the exhilarating technical descent of Kingston Lisle Hill. Then back through Goosey to the pub at Denchworth and/or back to Grove. 20 miles to the pub, 2 more to Grove. A good steady 12mph pace. |

Riders:Brian HipwellDes Higgs Gareth Smith Jo Little John Tranter Mila Yearley Phillip Folkes Robert Treadgold (deceased) Roger Postbeschild Roger Turnbull Roger Veasey Steve Joyce Susie Turnbull Val Smith Riders = 14 Weather:Report:What a perfect summer evening! A big group as a result and everyone seemed up for a little challenge to head up over the Ridgeway and back. Holborn and Hackpen Hills didn't seem to worry anyone excessively and the return leg up over Seven Barrows was despatched very easily. The big descents of Blowingstone and Kingston Lisle Hills were great fun and then we all headed for home and/or the throbbing Fox at Denchworth (throbbing with morris dancing as far as we could tell...)Also - three Rogers on one ride. That's got to be a new record! Thanks to all for your company and for a great ride! | ||

Tuesday 3* Evening Ride | 3* |

Leader:Jon Townsin |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. This is a bridging ride at the upper level of the range to allow riders to gauge their pace and gain confidence to step up to the next star level. For those who missed out on the chance to climb Chain Hill, due to rain a couple of weeks ago, here is your chance to relive a Wantage classic! (Thats 525m climbing in 44.6 km). We'll be climbing Chain Hill and down to West Ilsley. From there we'll head over to Catmore, up past Brightwalton and Woolley to the A338 climb to the Ridgeway. From there we'll head down to the Letcombes and back up Windmill Hill to East Challow. The hard work behind us, we head back to Denchworth for a well earned pub stop (for those of that persuasion!). Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. |

Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Smith David Talboys Eddie Little Jan McCabe Jane John John Groves Jon Townsin Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce Kirsten Smith Mike Cooke Nick Dunton Nicole Pethybridge Sharon Bedford Ursula Hallam Yvonne Bird Riders = 17 Weather:Report:A second attempt at this ride and I still haven't led the route I mapped - third time lucky?!A large group of 17 riders set off from Grove to enjoy a great evening, with lovely views across the vale and neighbouring Downland. The riders up the long climb of Chain Hill were rewarded with a 'halo of flies' (Alice Cooper - Killer 1971) at the regrouping point. Then down the fantastic descent to West Ilsley via Farnborough where I didn't get a puncture - Yay!. John, however, did have a mechanical which caused him and Nick 'the sweep' an unfortunate delay, which meant they didn't see us turn right to Catmore. After a longish wait Andy volunteered to go and investigate while we carried on. Kirsten led the way up most of the remaining climbs on her NEW BIKE, which got the tongues wagging behind me. The earlier delay meant that we arrived back to the Ridgeway at 8.15 and a decision was made to head back to Denchworth via route 1, rather than the more scenic Court and Windmill Hills. Andy, who wasn't party to this decision, however did enjoy the planned route (plus an unplanned visit to Chaddleworth!). Despite him riding 15km more than the rest of us he managed to have his dinner served and eaten before mine showed an appearance! | ||

Leader:Phil Ward |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly, 2 hour ride at a riding pace of 27-29km/h (17-18mph). May be hilly, but this one isn't. However, we will get a tickle-on to make sure we're in good time (20:30 target) for Beer .Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the END of the ride. Lights are now sensible, whether stopping or not. This is a bridging ride at the upper level of the range to allow riders to gauge their pace and gain confidence to step up to the next star level, or indeed the bar! A recent predilection for heading South (and upwards) is complimented by a Northerly tour of historically troubled lands* where apparently a disorderly alehouse in Aston was suppressed at the inhabitants' request in 1700. In the 16th century inhabitants laying out a meadow in Aston were entitled to bread and a gallon of ale from those with rights there, and "complex meadow customs" persisted until inclosure. Nearby, contaminated wells in Cote may have caused a diphtheria epidemic in 1893, leading to a return to Alehouses as a more reliable source of wholesome liquid refreshment . For those expecting a musical reference I can merely refer you to a topical massacre of one of Bizet's best known tunes.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imgxOmW6VZ0 Cheers ! * http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/oxon/vol13/pp62-66 |

Riders:Hugh FalknerJason Jones Louis Hall Nick Fisher Nick Stokell Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Sara Ward Riders = 9 Weather:Report:Gathering at OMH in a Summer’s evening balm with the promise of light winds and warm sunshine, a wariness was evident at the prospect of a tandem lead. Fear not, calm the chattering gears, the Ryan brothers were not in town! However, a pleasing array of materials and componentry spanning steel, alu and carbon was evident with Jason’s shiny new silky smooth transmission a highlight and Hugh with goodness knows what treasures rattling away in his bagsLuke Bryan’s “harvest time†sprang to mind as we forged ahead past ripening fields, spotting the odd baled stack and even a ploughed completion. Progress paused (thanks Jarv for the heads up) as Louis picked up a Charney puncture and elected to make his own way thereafter. So it was “Saddle back up and let the big wheels roll†as we dropped onto the flatlands and made rapid progress along the quiet network of narrow lanes between Bablock Hythe and Standlake, inhaling the occasional tangy insect and studiously ignoring the five drops of rain that fell from puffy cumulus ranging over Witney and beyond. Our route turned away from the threatening clouds but straight into the path of a very cross woman in Standlake, towards whom I extend thanks for giving us such a beautiful demonstration of unrestrained car hornage. Tracking back and forth across the lanes around Aston found us some new tarmac, some tired farm tracks and for Pete an opportunity to reprise his grass track skills Climbing back up to Buckland sprang our brace of Nicks into a flurry of impressive polka dotted action, leading on to negotiating a pony and trap rolling road block on the fast downhill run to Charney. All ended well and we arrived on schedule at the Fox to be met with fervent Moorish action already underway in the garden. I was until now, unaware of the national status of sides based in Bampton, Headington and Abingdon leading the continuity league, spanning many centuries. The staple fuel of Morris dancers seemed appropriate at this point and a just reward for a glorious ride – my thanks to you all for your contributions, not least my patient super stoker Sara, enjoying her second 4* romp (56.6 km at 29.3 kph). | ||
