Tuesday 1* Evening Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.Tonight we'll head eastwards to Ginge and West Hendred. We'll take the cycletrack along the A338 to Charlton and after winding our way through the estate, pick up Sustrans Route 544 near the Nelson PH. We'll follow route 544 through Lockinge and Betterton climbing gently to Ginge. We can then enjoy the lovely long descent into West Hendred. Once in the village, we'll take an easy off-road track from the church through to Ardington and then return to Grove via Lains Barn, with a second long descent into the Vale. A round trip of about 12 miles. |

Riders:Alvaro ReyBrian Hipwell Gemma Steele Kerry Tucker Lorna Swanton Naomi Merritt Sheena Arnold Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Thiyanga Kotecha Riders = 10 Weather:Report:After the poor weather and abandonments over the last month, it was nice to have 'normal service' resumed this week, albeit with the threat of storms in the air. A good turnout too - a warm welcome to Thiyanga and Gemma on their first rides with us and welcome back to Kerry. We had a bit of everything on the ride tonight: road, cycletrack, steady climbing and 2 lovely long descents plus an introduction to cyclocross and some real rough-stuff! Heading out through Charlton to join the Sustrans route by the Nelson, we made steady progress to Ginge stopping on several occasions for a brief rest and to admire the views up to the Downs and across the springline plateau. At West Hendred we stopped by the church and dismounted to walk through the graveyard before carrying our bikes first over a kissing gate and then over a low stile. Crossing a small bridge over Letcombe Brook, we climbed up into the field beyond. There we remounted to join the path across to Ardington, initially a baked mud track through a field of ripening wheat and then metalled, this was a lovely change from the A417! At Ardington, Gemma and Alvaro continued on to Wantage while the rest of us climbed up to the Lains Barn crossroads (with aplomb) and sped down into the Vale, passing several small groups of Didcot Phoenix riders out for their Tuesday training ride. Back in Grove about 8:10 we arrived at OMH at the same time as the 2* group. A really enjoyable ride with a smashing group; thanks everyone. | ||

Tuesday Off Road Evening Ride | 2* |

Leader:David Yearley |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Riders:David BrownDavid Yearley Jason Jones John Davies Riders = 4 Report:Welcome to the off-road rides to Jason, who braved a bit of mud in lieu of his normal 4* Road Ride.We started with a puncture before getting too far into the ride, and we ended with an incurable puncture that saw Dave B catching a lift home in a car. From Grove we took the usual Crab Hill route to Wantage, and then up to the Ridgeway via Goddard's Brook. The conditions were lovely on top, so we decided to drop down through Ice Valley to Land's End and then climb back up to the summit via the nearby track from the Ilsley road. The Gingle singletrack beckoned, which is where Dave B suffered his puncture. You might like to ask him which brand of tyre to avoid in future if you're running tubeless. A good ride, even if it was elongated by unfortunate puncture stops. | ||

Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. It seems a while since we've headed out through the Letcombes, so I thought we'd do just that this evening. After Holborn Hill we'll swoop down into Childrey, then Sparsholt and Uffington before heading back via Baulking Road, Park Lane and Denchworth. Apart from Holborn Hill and the slight undulations on the short sections of the Spring Line road, this is a flat ride of 32km/19 miles. |

Riders:David PaineDes Higgs Ellie Paine Jenny Gower John Groves Karen Townsin Karl Blake Mark Howell Nicole Pethybridge Robert Treadgold (deceased) Roger Turnbull Roger Veasey Susie Turnbull Terry Penn Riders = 14 Weather:Report:Well, my measure of a good ride is when the leader comes in last chatting to the sweep; so a good ride then. Nicole and I in last behind a competent bunch of keen riders eager to stretch their legs on the last section of the ride.A very warm welcome to Mark on his first ride with the club, welcome back to Roger and the very welcome return of Terry to what's looking like almost full fitness - though I don't call the Denchworth Dash much of a cool down! Lovely to see such a good group out even when the forecast looked threatening. Humid and dry until about 10 minutes after we finished when the rain finally came. Great timing everyone. Thanks for a very enjoyable evening and thanks to Nicole for back-marking. | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |

Riders:David SmithDavid Talboys Eddie Little Jan McCabe Jane John Jon Townsin Louis Hall Mike Cooke Nick Dunton Sharon Bedford Ursula Hallam Yvonne Bird Riders = 12 Weather:Report:Gathering storm clouds caused some apprehension at the start but we got round dry. A blustery wind slowed progress in places, particularly climbing Hackpen from Lambourn, but generally we maintained a good pace throughout. Harvesting had started on the downs above Letcombe with a toxic cloud of dust and chaff blowing across the road to the discomfort of those of us who wear contact lenses. Thanks to Jon for sweeping the ride. | ||

Leader:Richard Kembleton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly. The rolling lanes of the Downs... up Chain Hill and a set of zig-zags through West Ilsley, Catmore, Peasemore, and Leckhampsted before coming back over the top and down Court Hill to the Letcombes. A final flat 10k through Childrey to Denchworth to set up the Dash. I'll work out where the Dash actually finishes sometime. Possibility of localised heavy rain this evening. Please keep an eye on the weather forecast and equip accordingly. |
||
Riders:Frank SchroerNick Stokell Paul Jarvis Phil Ward Richard Kembleton Riders = 5 Report:Three of us set out from Grove, then picked up Frank fairly promptly and Paul at the top of Chain Hill. In a perfect summer temperature we wound our way through the lanes between West Ilsley, Peasemore, and Chaddleworth with only a slight hiccup when something marked as a road on the map turned out to be bridleway... but a short detour put us back on track. Riders started dropping off in the Letcombes and only two of us made it all the way to the Dash, with Frank taking the honours. A perfect evening ride and thanks to the riders for their company. | ||
