Tuesday 2* Evening Ride - cancelled | 2* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.*** Cancelled due the heavy rain ** A change of plan - heading east instead of west to repeat a route I led last year. Tonight, we'll follow the little-frequented road from East Hendred up to the Ridgeway to visit Scutchamer knob, a prehistoric long barrow, reputed to have been an important meeting place in saxon times. Although a steady climb from the end of the Ginge Farm track, this is probably the easiest of all on-road climbs locally to the top of the Downs . There are panoramic eastward views across the downs to enjoy from the car park at the top . We'll head out via Charlton and Sustrans route 544 returning via the Hendreds, Ardington and Lains Barn. A few stretches of easy off-road but all manageable on a road bike. Round trip of just under 18 miles. |

Tuesday 3* Evening Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Jon Townsin |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.**It might be soggy and dark so bring lights and waterproofs !!!** Its been a while since we've been up Chain Hill so give your bike a special clean and get ready for another challenge! Once at the top of Chain Hill we'll head down the fantastic descent into West Ilsley then back up again over the downs to Brightwalton and Woolley. From there we'll head along the A338 to the descent down Court Hill and back to grove via Denchworth. The route is just under 45 K with 500+m climbing so you can expect some climbing |

Report:We few, we happy few, we band of brothers ...Well, actually only two undaunted souls braved the rain on an epic adventure to take in the challenges of Oxfordshire and Berkshire in the rain! Eddie and I headed off to Mount Doom (Chain Hill) which was despatched with ease and without incident. After a brief rest at the top we splashed our way through puddles (sorry Eddie - I'll fit a guard next time!) and on to Farnborough. At the bottom of the descent into West Ilsley (and thinking to myself 'this is ok, whats the worst that can happen?' ) I got a puncture, which was nice . After a brief wrestle with the tyre and with the help of Eddie's portable track pump we were off again up and over the downs to Catmore. It required only a glance between riders to know that the shorter route back up the A 4494 was the better option and so with pride and conscience intact we cut the route short and ran for home! Thanks for a memorable ride Eddie | ||

Riders:Carrie KembletonNick Stokell Ruth Fisher Riders = 3 Weather:Report:Well if I'm honest I wouldn't have ridden this evening if I had not been leading the ride! But Ruth and Carrie turned up so we set off southwards in the steadily increasing rain. Just after Leckhampstead the inevitable occurred and Ruth had a puncture. This was quickly repaired by her despite a rather pathetic attempt by the leader to speed things up with a CO2 canister. With shoes full of water and a little cold after the stop we decided to shorten the ride heading back at Gt Shefford. Half way up Manor Hill Carrie announced that her rear tyre was getting soggy but it held up sufficiently to get back down to Wantage. Certainly one to remember (though we never did get that photo). Well done! (I can picture some of you 4* hard men hanging your heads in shame) | ||
