Leader:Steve Boreham |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.Tonight we will go out via Denchworth, and on to Charney Bassett and Gainfield, before arriving at Stanford in the Vale. We return via Park Lane & Asti Stud. Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. Slightly longer ride at about 14 miles. Lights recommended if stop at the pub. |

Report:Despite the good weather, it was a surprisingly small group of four of us tonight. Although others took up the challenge of the 2 star. However, this made for a wonderful relaxed ride in the sunshine. Several relaxed "chat" stops - some at impromptu moments (not that we were not talking as we rode along!!) Due to this, we were comparatively late back (8.20pm) to Grove. Was wonderful to maximise the long sunny evening, and were even able to reminisce about holidays past, of lovely memories.... and we also discussed bathroom refurbishments - does the excitement ever end?? Thanks to all three of you for a lovely ride - enjoyed your company - and so a very easy ride to lead, and to round off, I joined other riders back at the pub. Cannot be bad....

Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.A change of direction this week as we head North to Appleton. A slightly longer (23 miles) but largely flat route. Out via Lyford and Southmoor, we'll stop for a rest by the picturesque village pond in Appleton. On our return we'll take a little used cut-through to avoid the A420 roundabout before joining the A338 for about a mile to Tubney. Then back via Fyfield and Charney Bassett. There will be an optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. Please bring lights if planning to cycle home after the pub stop. |

Riders:Bethany TranterBrian Hipwell Carin Tranter Claire Borton David Jackson Gareth Smith John Tranter Lorna Swanton Robert Treadgold (deceased) Simon John Steve Swanton Tony Clark Val Smith Riders = 13 Weather:Report:A very pleasant evening on the bike followed by equally enjoyable company over a drink or dinner in the Fox.12 riders set off from OMH to be joined by Robert at the Winter Lane cross-roads. Welcome to Claire on her first ride with us and riding a road bike for the first time too. We rode steadily out to Southmoor, crossing the A420 for the first time using the bridleway bridge. Then turning eastwards, we benefitted from the breeze on our backs as we followed the watershed road (as I call it) out to Appleton. We had a rest by the war memorial, the pond proving not to be so picturesque this year due to the green algae. The cut-through and A420 crossing south of the village were new to everyone and after a short stretch on the A338 we were soon back on quieter roads, continuing through Tubney to take the underpass under the A420 into Fyfield, where we crossed the A-road for the fourth time,. At Fyfield layers were added as the evening was cooling, but soon the sun finally broke through properly to bathe us in golden evening light. Unfortunately, we couldn't linger as we needed to get to the pub, and we arrived at 8:48 just in time for some of us to eat. Well done to those completing their longest rides so far of the season. Thanks to all for your amiable company and to Tony for sweeping.

Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.Fairly flat ride tonight as the pub beckons! Out to Baulking via Goosey and then bypassing Uffington to Fernham, over the A417 to Hatford then on to Hinton Waldrist. We'll return over the A420 via the bridge to Kingston Bagpuize. The ride will finish at Denchworth at the Fox, but if you are not stopping you are unlikely to be returning to Grove on your own! Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. |

Riders:Adrian WestAlex McGregor Andy Pixton Barry Stanton David Smith David Talboys Des Higgs Eddie Little Hugo Pile Jan McCabe Jane John Jo Little John Groves Jon Townsin Joy Arthur Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Kirsten Smith Mike Cooke Olivia Pile Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Ursula Hallam Yvonne Bird Riders = 24 Weather:Report:I wrote a brilliant report for this ride, witty, interesting, lots of name checks. It didn't save and now its a week later and this is not going to be a brilliant ride reportWith 22 people gathered for a 3* evening ride and 2 more joining us in Denchworth, it was good that Karen stepped forward to lead half the ride. Half of us set off, waving to Yvonne as she waited for the second group and having swept up Jan into our group continued briskly through Goosey and over the 417 to the Baulking turn. A brief regrouping and we were through Baulking and over to the Fernham road. Before we knew it, we were no longer having a bit of a battle with a headwind and back over the 417 and on to Pusey. A safe crossing of the A420 through to the bridge to Southmoor and only minor grumbles at my choosing the sandy narrow track to reach the main road! The beautiful tarmac of the Hanney Road tempted Kirsten, Hugo and Adrian to try some racing but it was too mellow an evening for that to work! Then we were back to Denchworth, saying goodbye to those not going to the Fox. Thanks to Andy and Jon for sweeping for Karen and I, and to Karen for leading too. I'm loving the Cycling UK Wantage team work that's going on this season .

Tuesday 4* Evening Ride | 4* |

Leader:Phil Ward |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph).HILLY - GEAR, CLOTHE & FUEL accordingly for ~700m vertical please. This is a LONG/TOUGH ride - LIGHTS required, in case of mechanicals etc. Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. Heading South of the M4 tonight & "down to the river (Pang) we'd ride" as Mr Springsteen sang. Weather permitting, tonight will see us head off up the 4 pitches of Chain Hill, regrouping as necessary at the very top (Lockinge Kiln Farm driveway). From there via the short sharp Ilsley climbs to Compton's formidable Applepie Hill. Relief follows in a fast & exciting descent, taking a careful right at The Four Points, dropping past the tropical jungles of Wyld Ct. Farm towards Hampstead Norreys. A sharp left here onto deliciously narrow gravelly lanes alongside the Pang for a good while (banana time ) until we break West to begin climbing again towards Hermitage and thence Chieveley. But, on recrossing the M4, Chieveley is denied by a quick right to Worlds' End (hat tip to REM) prior to reaching Stanmore. It's verdant leafy lanes to Lilley before picking up the B4494 and the plunge off Chain Hill, dropping like basses in to Wantage approaching sunset. The led ride will END at the base of Chain Hill at approx 9pm. For those with energy, time, funds and a raging thirst, Tales of the Big Chainring can be recounted over a Foxy beer in Denchworth - probably best decided on the night. |

Riders:Harry Kenyon-SlaneyHugh Falkner Jason Jones Jerry Bird Louis Hall Nick Stokell Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Richard Anstis Sian Mitchell Riders = 11 Weather:Report:Notwithstanding the decision by some to eschew the posted ride particulars (they are there for a reason, people !), the "big one" started out from OMH with an impressive 10 participants, only to be swollen further by the welcome addition of a jolly Jarv, found lurking atop Chain HillBriefly refreshed, we then set about the tailwind assisted traverse Eastwards to Compton via the cheeky Ilsley pitches. Commuter traffic in the lanes was still evident as the challenging Applepie Hill was dispatched in good style leading on to Hampstead Norreys and the feature section of the ride : a delicious linkage of subtly-dropping lanes alongside the Pang. Half distance saw the far turn Westwards made just prior to Bucklebury (tempting as the ford might have been). We climbed steadily through the manicured woodlands and rattled into Hermitage. My "little surprise" of a short piece of Byway didn't seem to cause too much consternation among the troops (sorry, I should have flagged that was coming). Recrossing the M4 and then the A34 signalled the final long steady climb to regain Chain Hill was beginning and caused some splintering under what was becoming a glorious evening. The (now head)wind all but dropped out and the skies cleared to illuminate the Vale beautifully. Just five minutes after the predicted 9pm finish, we ended the ride at the base of Chain. Near enough 60km with 730m of climbing at 25.4kph. Many thanks all, a cracking stress-free evening in great company.
