Tuesday 1* Evening Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.The forecast is looking much more promising this week! So having abandoned our planned route to Betterton last Tuesday, we'll try it this week instead. It is one of my favourite 1* loops through glorious scenery and a real confidence booster for some gentle climbing and descending. We'll head out through Charlton and pick up the Sustrans Route 544 near the Nelson PH. We'll continue to Lockinge , where we'll stop to admire the statue of a famous local resident. There is a gentle climb up to Betterton where we'll turn off for Ardington. We'll stop for a rest at the top of the hill to take in the views before enjoying the long descent into the village. We'll return to Grove via Lains Barn, with a second climb and then a second long descent into the vale to enjoy. There is no rush on the climbs and everyone can ride at their own pace. It's a round trip of about 9 miles. |

Leader:David Yearley |
Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:After a couple of weeks heading for the hills in the South of our patch, I thought we'd go for a flatter ride this week, heading out to Uffington via Childrey and back through Fernham, Stanford-in-the-Vale and Denchworth. About 35km/21miles with a couple of gentle and short rises at East Challow and Westcot. There is a small section of bridleway, though this is well surfaced and easy to ride. |

Riders:Bethany TranterDavid Paine Gareth Smith Jo Little Karen Townsin Robert Treadgold (deceased) Sara Ward Susie Turnbull Tim Parr Val Smith Riders = 10 Weather:Report:An absolutely fantastic evening for a bike ride. Great views across the Vale and a gentle route that felt more down than up made for a very mellow ride.Susie took us on a cut through in Childrey that was new to me and Sara offered to sweep which made it a very relaxing ride for the leader too. Thanks everyone. | ||

Leader:Jon Townsin |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. This week we're heading out west via Goosey, Hatford and Shellingford to enjoy the show of Hawthorn trees north of Compton Beachamp (they ere a little disappointing on the trial ride!). Back via Uffington and Denchworth. The short climb up to Knighton is the only respite from the otherwise pan flat Vale The distance of 45k over fairly flat terrain should get us back to OMH before 8.30 pm. |

Riders:Adrian WestBarry Stanton David Talboys Des Higgs Eddie Little Jan McCabe Jane John John Groves Jon Townsin Joy Arthur Karl Blake Mike Cooke Ursula Hallam Riders = 13 Weather:Report:An absolutely beautiful evening to go cycling in the Vale ! An evenly matched group set off at a mid - upper 3* pace to cover the 46 kilometres in good time. Traffic was scarce and the roads were enjoyably quiet. Sadly scarce also was the hawthorn showing north of Compton BeachampAdrian and Des had cycled to the start from home so peeled off mid-ride (but not before the only climb of the evening !). Karl suffered a puncture on the way down from Knighton, which meant we could all enjoy the lovely evening and the pleasant company of the cows! We picked up the pace on the second half of the ride and everyone seemed to manage the increase with Jane heading the group down the homeward (Denchworth) stretch . We got back a little later than planned at 8.45 after a very pleasant ride indeed. Thanks to all for enjoying it with me and thanks to Dave for sweeping. | ||

Tuesday 4* Evening Ride | 4* |

Leader:Phil Ward |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly.A #Diamond ride of two halves that we ran last year in cold drizzle, it deserves better! A pan flat Rihanna-style bland opening to settle us into a useful rhythm , switching to undulations better matched to the guttural Shirley Bassey, comprising three short punchy climbs at Steventon, Upton & West Hendred , each of which is followed by gentle downslopes, the last of which should give us a glorious early-summer sun-drenched scenic finale through the Lockinges Sunset shouldn't be a problem by now, but FRONT & REAR lights are required for gloomy/overcast/wet evenings & will be welcome as we run in through the heavily shadowed Lockinge woodlands. |

Riders:Allen StaceyDavid Smith Frank Schroer Hugh Falkner Jason Jones Louis Hall Nick Stokell Paul Jarvis Phil Ward Ruth Fisher Riders = 10 Weather:Report:Bob Marley had it right for tonight’s ride East across the Vale in glorious evening light.“Sun is shining, the weather is sweet Make you want to move your riding feet….” However, the curse of the broken spoke struck the 4* brigade for a third time this year. Notwithstanding a distinct wobble, the offending wheel held sufficiently true to complete the ride. Climbs were enlivened at Steventon (by an irrational and impatient elderly driver) and Upton (by an errant flint-based puncture). By the time we reached the final rise up from West Hendred a distinctly recreational feel had fallen over the group and we chattered happily all the way back through the Lockinges. A distinctly mellow ride in glorious conditions, that being said we still cranked round at over 28kph. Thanks all for a cracking evening’s entertainment. Tune in next week for a hilly epic of quite a different nature. | ||
