Tuesday 1* Evening Ride - Abandonned | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.Tonight we'll head to Lockinge, Betterton and Ardington returning to Grove via Lains Barn, one of my favourite 1* loops. We'll tackle a couple of climbs and enjoy two great descents - a round trip of about 9 miles. |

Riders:Riders = 0Report:With rain forecast and only three of us for the 1* ride, all of whom have ridden 2* some Tuesdays this year, we decided to be sociable, follow the 2* ride to the Letcombes and then cut back after Holborn Hill. However, with light rain falling , Lorna decided to call it a day before we'd left Grove. So Steve and I continued to join the 2* group, by which time the rain had stopped, and both of us decided to take up the Hackpen challenge... | ||

Tuesday Off Road Evening Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:David Yearley |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Tuesday 2* Evening Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:I think the time has come to gently introduce one of the classic local hills - Hackpen. We will head out around Wantage to the Letcombes and then tackle the ascent up to the Ridgeway on Hackpen Hill. Don't worry - everyone will go at their own pace and we will re-group for a breather at the top. Your reward will be a huge sense of achievement, great views and a lovely swoop down to Sparsholt. Then we'll work along the contours to Kingston Lisle for another great descent into the Vale and an easy route home via Goosey and Denchworth.20 miles / 30km |

Riders:Adrian WestBrian Hipwell David Paine Des Higgs Ellie Paine John Tranter Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Well, the pretty awful weather forecast clearly put a few people off and we ended up running a joint 1* / 2* ride. In the event, although we had a few spots of rain, nothing terrible materialised, so I think we were lucky. Steamy though! The hills all worked out fine including the great Hackpen, and the reward was lovely views across the Vale towards Oxford and Didcot, plus the great descent towards Sparsholt. The various Paines split off to head home having ridden out to Grove in the first place (great effort) and then - remarkably, Steve Swanton had a puncture! Basically, this never happens as Steve is renowned for running a bombproof machine with some of the chunkiest road tyres in the club. But sure enough we found a very serious flint mini axe head stuck in the tyre. Essential repairs also proved to be necessary to Steve B's quick release skewer, so all in all we had a bit of a mechanical moment in Sparsholt. To compensate for the delays, we cut the ride short and headed straight back to Goosey, Denchworth and home. Thanks to all for your company - a mellow ride in the lovely Vale! | ||

Tuesday 3* Evening Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A scenic trip to Didcot and the NR5 cycle-path behind the power station. This is a wildlife haven and alive with rabbits and red kites [good opportunity to practise bunny-hopping!]. Route is fully surfaced and fine for road bikes. However, we’ll also take the cycle path between Ginge and East Hendred which is rough in places. Fairly flat route of 46.7km, so aiming for a reasonable pace. Note: in places this route uses busier roads than the majority of our rides, so best to avoid if you dislike riding in traffic. |

The threatened rain didn’t materialize and wet-weather gear was mostly abandoned at the top of the first hill. I had forgotten my eye-protection: not a good idea on probably the buggiest ride of the year so far. Welcome to Charlie Schmidt – JG’s friend from Zimbabwe – who was well able to keep up with us, even on a mountain bike. I fear we didn’t show him the prettiest parts of Oxfordshire! We spotted Louis Hall adding dog-walking kilometres to his Strava account in Lockinge. The transit of Didcot was relatively quiet and uneventful. Once off the Power Station cycle-path, we picked-up the pace through the flatlands of Drayton, Steventon, and the Hanneys, leading to a spirited Denchworth dash. The jinx of Jane’s Junction returned but no damage was done to either rider or bike. My Garmin reported 46.9 km at an average speed of 23.2 kph – very respectable given the mix of paths and urban roads traversed. Thanks Andy for sweeping. | ||

Tuesday 4* Evening Ride | 4* |

Leader:Paul Jarvis |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A re run of a ride from last August Taking in Denchworth, Hatford , Littleworth, Faringdon , Flats ride of about 46K should return by 8.10pm |
||
Riders:Jerry BirdNick Stokell Paul Jarvis Richard Anstis Riders = 4 Report:Fab four rode out in overcast conditions .A somewhat depleted 4* group tonight as Pete and Frank were at a TTT with Didcot Phoenix and others where missing without leave ! This made for a somewhat lower paced and more social ride than our usual 4* rides. Much to the annoyance of Nicks Garmin the Ride leader had decided to change the ride direction and added a few extra miles as we were making good pace. Richard peeled off towards the end to Hanney leaving only three to take up the Denchworth Dash yours truly was so far off the pace binoculars would have been needed to see the result between Jerry and Nick. Thanks to all who made it out and hopefully we'll see more next week. | ||
