There is a very short section on the A417. |

Riders:Bethany TranterBrian Hipwell David Paine Ellie Paine John Culverwell John Tranter Lorna Swanton Mike Bailey Nicole Pethybridge Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Tony Clark Val Smith Riders = 13 Weather:Report:A good group of riders aiming to enjoy a 2 star ride for the first time or returners looking for a gentle evening ride to ease them back into the summer season.Whilst clouds threatened it stayed dry and we all headed off through Denchworth for an anti-clockwise ride north or Grove. A good pace was maintained by all as people experienced a 2 star for the first time and found it all very manageable. The only mis hap was when Brian became over enthusiastic about finding his fortune by stopping abruptly to pick up a five pound note in the road. His exuberance was then matched by John Ts exasperation as he went into the back of him and came down on the verge. No actual damage done and I think John T pocketed the £5 for his trouble Over the sneaky A420 bridleway between Southmoor and Hinton Waldrest and we were into the home straight. Returning across the A420 the group picked up pace towards Denchworth & home, happy in their achievements of the evening. | ||

Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. This is a bridging ride at the lower level of the range to encourage riders who feel ready to move up to the next star level. This week we are going to have a very gentle introduction to Hackpen Hill. We'll make our way through the Letcombes, pausing at the top of Holborn Hill to admire the view and catch our breath before on to the piece de resistance: Hackpen. Everyone will go up at their own pace and have time at the top to enjoy the gorgeous views before swooping down to Sparsholt and a potter round the Vale before returning to Grove. |

Riders:Barry StantonDavid Smith David Talboys Des Higgs Eddie Little Jan McCabe Jane John Jo Little John Groves Karl Blake Katherine Boyce Mike Cooke Sara Ward Sharon Bedford Steve Joyce Susie Turnbull Ursula Hallam Yvonne Bird Riders = 18 Weather:Report:It was really good to see 2* riders out on a bridging ride, trying out a 3* and prepared to do hills as well! Great start to a lovely ride.We managed to cross Wantage without too many problems. The temporary traffic lights on Ham Road were kind to us. A regroup on the Letcombe road and we were off to our first hill - Holborn. This was swiftly dispatched with no problems at all. Onwards to Hackpen and Eddie showed us how it should be done! At the top we lingered to catch the fabulous views of the Vale, no one in a hurry to drop back down to the Vale. We did eventually, all missing the new potholes on the road to Sparsholt, a big contrast to the wonderfully smooth road down from Childrey to the A417. The small groups of riders regrouped on the Goosey road before we finished off with a small circuit of the Vale. For much of our ride, it was clear that we had just missed a major downpour. Those of us without mudguards paid the price with muddy bikes! Rather that than a sodden group With such a big group, David and Ursula kindly led a second wave of us when we were on the busy roads to ensure we caused minimal road chaos. A lovely friendly ride, thank you all for contributing. | ||

Tuesday 4* Evening Ride | 4* |
---|
Leader:Phil Ward |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at an average riding pace of ~25km/h (16mph). May be hilly. This is a bridging ride at the LOWER level of the range to encourage riders who feel ready to move up to the next star level. Donovan's "Mello Yellow" (1967) is an inspiration for this ride. C'mon and feel the 4* breeze folks - but not too much of it as you'll be tucked in nicely, following a wheel won't you? Actually, as the song says "Born high forever to fly, Wind velocity nil" we might even get dreamy evening float conditions, we'll see ? We're heading East towards the Power Station (hat tip to Robert Palmer) on a shorter 44km loop. Lumps and bumps predominantly in the first half, on at times narrow and gravel-strewn lanes, opening out to delicious smooth tarmac around Milton Park in a rare urban dalliance. The final section is a flat run-in to build the tension culminating with the Denchworth Dash to give the full 4* experience . At a relaxed average speed of ~25kph (range 16-40kph) it should take us to around 8:15pm to get round, well before dusk. Lights and spares are de rigueur, appropriate clothing/drinks etc for the day is up to you - I'm not your Mum !! Come expecting some closer formation/group riding (its both efficient & collegial), concentration, clear "hazard calling" and a good workout. We chat too, but only when all the other bases are covered Any queries please do get in touch, we don't bite, honest! |

Riders:Frank SchroerJason Jones Jerry Bird Paul Jarvis Phil Ward Richard Kembleton Sian Mitchell Riders = 7 Weather:Report:We welcomed Sian Mitchell (yet another of the enthusiastic Hendred Posse) to the 4* fold and headed out in cool, grey but dry conditions. Early climbing up past Lains Barn showed the group to be all feeling up for giving it a bit of a tickle, so we pushed on to negotiate challenging lanes-surfaces en route to Ginge. Marginally smoother tarmac on the A417 was met with a pacy run to Rowstock and the jiggle to take in Harwell Village. Didcot marked our Eastern limit and we turned to begin the push for home through Milton Park, surviving some erratic motorists and recrossing the A34 to knock off the final climb up above Steventon. The Hanney Road and a lanes detour via Lyford brought us rattling towards Denchworth and the much anticipated Dash, which appeared to be keenly contested although I was by this time well out of position to pronounce a victor. A 5 minute advance on our predicted Grove return suggested a solid (<2 min stationary time), but oftentimes conversational pace had been maintained throughout the cooling evening, tick boxWell done all on completing a route through what at times resembled minefields or a moonscape without any mechanicals or mishaps. Persistent & clear hazard calling helped enormously, thanks. Roll on Summer eh ? | ||
