Chairman’s Newsletter – March 2019

Posted on March 18th, 2019

Hello everyone

Well, we’ve had our fair share of wild weather this winter, be it snow or gales, but on the whole the winter rides programme has gone extremely well and certainly the number of riders have been very encouraging. I do particularly want to highlight the new Thursday morning rides, which have gone from strength to strength and are proving very popular indeed. And – we had a great club dinner in January (thanks, Steph!). I would like to focus on four things in this Newsletter:

1) Please note that our Tuesday evening programme kicks off again on Tuesday 2nd April – only two weeks tomorrow. It is going to be great to be back in that weekly rhythm with five rides going out from Old Mill Hall at 6.30 each Tuesday. As always, check the website for details. It is always good to welcome both new riders and regulars who are emerging, blinking, from cycling hibernation. I should add that the 1* Tuesday night rides kick in a bit later, on 23rd April (so strictly speaking, it’s four rides per Tuesday until then!).

2) We have a few special events to encourage newcomers next month. There is our ‘Back On Your Bike Ride’ on Saturday 20th April, the offroad equivalent on Sunday 7th April and – a new innovation this year – a Family Ride on the morning of Thursday 11th April. Again, see the website for full details.

3) We had a very successful Ride Leaders meeting on 25th February and also a couple of recent new Ride Leader training sessions so we have a good crop of new Ride Leaders to add in to the existing mix. The rides calendar for the spring and summer season is well populated with leaders so my advice is to take a browse through the website and start to put rides on your calendars.

4) One of our members, Nick Dunton, is organising a First Aid course specific to cycling related injuries. Don’t get us wrong here – we all know that cycling is just about the healthiest thing we can be doing and accidents are very, very rare. But – to be informed in advance of any issues can be very helpful. He is trying to gauge interest and also to pin down a date in the next month or so. If you’re interested, could you please drop a note to Nick at duntonnickj@gmail.com.

That’s all for now – see you on a ride soon!

Best regards
John
