Chairman’s Newsletter – December 2017

Posted on December 23rd, 2017

Hello everyone

A few things to bring to your attention before we are consumed by the Christmas and New Year season:

MINCE PIE RIDE OUTCOMES
It seems that our various recovery plans have worked out quite well:

– the Wantage and Grove Foodbank were very grateful for our mince pies so all our commercially packaged pies went to that local good cause.
– the riders on the ‘Mini Mince Pie Ride’ last Saturday were treated to the best home made pies, as well as some of the epic mulled wine, at our very civilised refreshment stop chez Swanton.
– all of the re-bottled wine disappeared from the porch so I’m sure those are being enjoyed at various times over the holiday period.
– perhaps most importantly, a very big thank-you to all who gave so generously to Whizz Kidz (including a number of the local clubs who would normally have joined us on the ride). Remarkably, we have ended up with a total of £440.15, which is not significantly less than we would have achieved in a normal year!

ANNUAL CLUB DINNER – SATURDAY 3rd FEBRUARY
The next important date for your diaries is our annual club dinner. As usual, we are scheduling this to cunningly avoid the peak holiday craziness. This year the details are as follows:

– venue: the Fox and Hounds pub in Uffington. Post code is SN7 7RP.
– date: Saturday 3rd February 2018.
– time: 7 for 7.30pm.

We have the conservatory booked, with a maximum capacity of 30 people. For now, please contact Sara Ward to book places: secretary@cyclingukwantage.org.uk. Details of menu choices and deposit arrangements will follow in the New Year.

CLUB WEBSITE MAINTENANCE WORK
Our indefatigable Webmaster, David Smith, has been busy behind the scenes with a number of upgrades to the inner workings of our club website to ensure it is compliant with the all the latest standards for stability and security. He will be making some fairly major changes over the holiday period – these should be invisible, but just bear this in mind if you do have any temporary glitches. Please let David know if anything is not working: david.smith@cyclingukwantage.org.uk.

The other very important point to note is that this is the shortest day of the year and so for the next 6 months, every day will give us more and more cycling daylight!

Happy Christmas and New Year,
John
