Welcome to the club!
As a courtesy to our ride leaders, we continue to pre-book for rides and we leave it to the leader’s discretion if they wish to set a limit on numbers.============================================
Goodness me – it is hard to remember a more weather affected start to a year. It has seemed like endless cycles of rain, floods, gales and ice for weeks on end – resulting in cycles not being used as much as we would like! I have to say that it is raining again as I write this, but we have seen a few signs of Spring in recent days so we live in hope. A few things to bring to your attention:
SPRING AND SUMMER RIDES PROGRAMME
Thanks to some great work by a team led by Katherine, our Rides Secretary, we are almost ready to upload the full rides programme from April through to September this year. Look out for this in the next few days and mark your calendars with your rides of choice. We have a full programme of rides on the weekends, Thursday mornings and Tuesday evenings as well as a great collection of special rides coming up. The Tuesday evening schedule starts straight after Easter on 2nd April.
RIDE LEADER NEWS
Such a comprehensive programme is only made possible by having a dedicated set of enough ride leaders. Katherine has been busy training some new leaders and we are looking forward to seeing them in action alongside the existing team soon. A reminder to all existing and new leaders that we have our pre-season ride leaders’ meeting set for 7.30 on Thursday evening, 14th March. The venue is East Challow Village Hall. Please RSVP to the email you have received from Jo Little to confirm attendance.
AGM DATE – EVENING OF WEDNESDAY 8th MAY
An advance date for your diaries. Our club year runs from April to March and our AGM this year will be held on the evening of Wednesday 8th May to look back on the 2023-24 club year. The venue will be Grove Rugby Club and we are planning the usual fish and chip supper. The bar will be open! More details to follow.
COMMITTEE NEWS
One of the tasks of the AGM is to elect the committee to run the club for the year to come. I am pleased to say that most of the existing committee members have expressed a willingness to stand again, but we always welcome new members so please let me know if you would be interested in joining the committee. We are particularly looking for some help with communications and publicity.
One final point in this area – having been the Chair of the club for 14 years, I have informed the committee that I intend to stand down from that role at the end of the coming year (in April 2025). Having been retired from work now for 18 months, there are a number of organisations and projects which I am getting involved in, and I feel the time is right for some fresh thinking and fresh leadership in the club. 14 years is a long stint! The club is in excellent shape and I hope to continue as a ride leader.
Hopefully see you on a (dry) ride soon!
Best regards
John
]]>I wish you all a very Happy New Year. Despite some truly awful cycling weather in recent weeks, it is nice to see some sunshine today and hopefully the floods all around our patch are now receding. The club rides programme is now up on the website to the end of March so you can start to plan your forthcoming adventures. A few things to highlight:
MINCE PIE RIDES AND THE WHITE HORSE CYCLE CHALLENGE
The weather conditions throughout December definitely affected the number of challenge rides which were possible this year, but great respect to those who did make it up the great Hill. Personally, I will long remember the ice forming on the front of the bikes during the kick-off ride, but also the glorious blue sky once we broke through the freezing fog! The main Mince Pie Rides went very well, with considerable support from many of the local clubs. We saw riders from Didcot, Abingdon, Newbury and Oxford amongst others, and I know that the Charlbury group is planning an alternative version of the ride soon. Using our sophisticated ‘cup count’ algorithm, we saw approx 85 riders pass through in total. As always, grateful thanks to the ride leaders and all who helped out on the day and in the preparations beforehand. It was also great to gather in the Fox at Denchworth for a lovely Christmas lunch afterwards. Adding together the online donations and the contributions on the day, we have raised a magnificent £1,242 to date and again many thanks to all who contributed so generously. The JustGiving link is still active for any outstanding contributions:
https://www.justgiving.com/page/whitehorsecyclechallenge2023
We had very good engagement and support from the Whizz Kidz charity and I had this message from them just before Christmas: “I’m so glad the event went well in spite of the weather! The amount raised is brilliant and will make a huge impact on the lives of young wheelchair users, either through equipment provided or support.” They have really raised their profile nationally with their inclusion in the Times newspaper Christmas Appeal and their involvement in the Doctor Who TV specials, so it has been great to be a small part of that.
A final point on this – as highlighted last month, Whizz Kidz have kindly gifted us a box of branded cycling jerseys to be distributed for any donation you wish to make to the Challenge. They are short sleeved summer weight jerseys (so you can dream of summer…) in all sizes from S to XL. Let me know if you would like to take one or try one on.
RIDE LEADER TRAINING
As always, the quantity and quality of our rides are entirely dependant on the willingness of our ride leaders to lead. We are fortunate indeed to have such a great group of leaders at all the ride levels, but we could always do with a few more. We are planning a ride leader training session for later in the month (date to be confirmed) – some of you have already expressed an interest in this and we wil be in touch individually, If anyone else would like to volunteer, then please let me know.
That’s enough for now – I hope you see you out on a ride soon!
Best regards
John
]]>Lots of exciting news in this Newsletter – all related to the Mince Pie Rides on Sunday 10th December and the White Horse Cycle Challenge running for the whole of December – an extended period this year:
THE WHITE HORSE CYCLE CHALLENGE 2023
We challenge individual riders to climb the great Uffington White Horse Hill at a time of their choosing between Saturday 2nd December and Sunday 24th December (on their own or in a group), take a selfie or photo at the top for proof, get extra respect for taking their own mince pie up there and raise money for Whizz Kids. Our target is to see 100 riders complete the challenge and to raise £2,000 for Whizz Kidz. The Challenge kicks off with a club 3* ride to the Hill on Saturday 2nd December (unless anyone beats us to it that day!)
We have set up a donations page here:
https://www.justgiving.com/page/whitehorsecyclechallenge2023
and would welcome donations to support the efforts of all riders, whether from riders themselves, their family or friends. Please share this link widely.
The event is open to all to who enjoy a cycling challenge. To help non‑regular or non-local cyclists give it a go, we have put together a route sheet from Grove and Wantage to White Horse Hill and back. It can be found here (as Route 8):
www.cyclingukwantage.org.uk/routesheets
We ask participants to post their photos on the club Facebook page at:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/cyclingukwantage
or to send by email to: info@cyclingukwantage.org.uk
This address can also be used for enquiries about the event.
THE MINCE PIE RIDES – SUNDAY 10th DECEMBER
As with the Challenge, we are raising money for Whizz Kidz and people are encouraged to donate via the Just Giving page highlighted above (we will take cash on the day as well).
Guests and other cycling clubs are very welcome to join us at Wantage Market Place from 9.30 for the start of the club rides or join us at White Horse Hill NT car park (grid ref SU 293866) from 11.00 to 12.00 for mince pies and mulled wine. We will have road rides at 1, 2 and 3* grades and an off-road ride – see separate ride entries on our website (www.cyclingukwantage.org.uk) for route details. This is a very popular event, so please arrive in good time for registration. Afterwards there will be rides led to The Fox at Denchworth for a pub lunch for those whose who have booked (bookings now closed). There will also be a ride directly back to Wantage/Grove.
As in previous years we are reliant on Club members to provide donations of mince pies, mulled wine, basic red wine or cranberry based juice beforehand, so we can maximise the giving to Whizz Kidz. For those of you who are new, we brew up cauldrons of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic mulled wine, based on my wife Carin’s secret recipes, and serve it from ex-military insulated jerry cans – it is awesome! Please give this some thought in your cooking and/or shopping schedules and drop supplies in to our porch at Evergreen, Main Street, Grove, OX12 7JF. Donations welcome from now!
Many thanks
John
]]>It’s been hard to fit this Newsletter in, such is the pressure to get out on my bike with this remarkable late summer we are experiencing. I hope you have all been able to enjoy some of that as well. A few things to bring to your attention:
Summer recap
It was a slightly strange summer weather-wise, with some perfect weather and some pretty awful weather, with some wonderful rides and quite a few cancelled rides, but overall a great programme with the highlights probably being our 30th Anniversary celebrations in July (and I was personally very humbled and appreciative of your gifts and good wishes at that event), plus the July century ride up into Warwickshire and the Isle of Wight ride in September. Thanks as always to all our amazing ride leaders for putting on such a great programme,
Tuesday evening Virtual Turbo sessions
This is an interesting example of an emergency response to the restrictions of Covid lockdowns ending up working really well and becoming a permanent feature – this year’s autumn programme of Virtual Turbo sessions started last week and has already attracted a good group. All are welcome to join – you don’t need any particularly smart indoor training set up, but you will need your own turbo trainer and a computer/laptop/mobile device with Zoom version 5 installed. See the website for all the details.
Mince Pie Rides – Sunday 10th December
It’s always a slightly difficult moment in our Committee Meetings when we find ourselves having to think about Christmas and the depths of winter in planning ahead, but we forced ourselves to do it again recently and so please note a date for your diaries and calendars – the club Mince Pie Rides this year will take place on Sunday 10th December. Another Covid legacy success is the related White Horse Cycling Challenge and we plan to open this up to the local community and local clubs thus time running for the whole of December. More details to follow.
Cycling UK national Trustee election
Many of you will have just received the latest edition of Cycling magazine. The package contains a voting paper for elections to the Cycling UK national Board of Trustees – please don’t throw it away! Our very own Robin Tucker was elected to this Board three years ago and he has been doing a great job in representing members’ views and providing strategic insight in the Trust discussions. His three year term has come to an end but he is standing again and is on the ballot paper. As it happens this year there are two vacancies and two people standing for election, so not too much of a cliff-hanger; however, it would be great if you could show your support for Robin by voting for him.
Active Travel consultation by Wantage and Grove Active Travel (WAGAT)
I know that many of you have already responded to this online survey which is seeking the views of the local community on their travel choices and aspirations for short local journeys. There has been a really good response already and (wearing one of my other hats as Chair of WAGAT) we are really pleased that several hundred local residents have taken the time to participate. The survey closes on Sunday 15th October and so this is a last encouragement for you all to participate. The survey can be found here and should only take 10 minutes to complete.
I hope to see you on a ride soon.
Best regards
John
A quick note (as the rain lashes down) to highlight a few things coming up:
Club 30th Birthday celebrations – Sunday 23rd July
The plans are now in place for this big celebration of our 30th Anniversary (thanks to Steve Swanton for taking the lead on this). There will be four rides on the day, all scheduled to get to Uffington Village Hall at around 3pm. The Hall will be open from 2.30 and all are welcome to join us for refreshments catered by the wonderful Chris Higgs. Feel free to join a ride or arrive independently, but can we ask that you all complete a quick registration via this link, so that we have a reasonable feel for the numbers for catering? The headline ride is a 3* all-day tour of local White Horses, but there will also be 1, 2 and off-road rides, so hopefully something for everyone. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there – please wear club kit if you have it (of any generation!)
Ride leading
The success of the club is entirely dependent on having great ride leaders to plan and lead our rides and to keep everyone safe and happy. Fortunately, we have many such people and we are constantly grateful to them for their dedication and hard work. However, as the club activities get back to pre-Covid levels (if not beyond) we are starting to see a squeeze on the capability of our existing set of leaders. Therefore we are asking any of who who are not presently leaders to consider whether you would like to join this merry band. Training is provided (which will be one focussed evening meeting) as is mentoring with a buddy leader helping out on initial led rides. I know that a few of you have already expressed interest in this and so we have those names, but we could do with a few more to help with spreading the load. Please contact me if you are interested.
Consultation on 20mph speed limit in Wantage
Oxfordshire County Council is consulting on a proposal from Wantage Town Council to introduce a blanket 20mph speed limit throughout the town. We very much support this proposal. It is easy to be cynical about how such limits might be ignored and how much enforcement is likely to actually happen, but evidence from elsewhere is clear that such changes do make a difference to driver behaviour – the initial pilot schemes in Oxfordshire saw average traffic speeds drop by up to 4mph. The blunt fact is that a car travelling at 20mph is considerably less likely to kill or seriously injure someone than a car travelling at 30mph, and given the narrow streets and pavements that we all have to live with in the town, this is a big deal. The County Council is supporting such schemes across the County and more general details can be found here. There is a map showing the detailed proposal for Wantage here. You will note that there are some roads on the edge of town remaining at 30mph limit. The idea behind this is to allow a ‘buffer’ for speed transition, but we are uncomfortable with this, particular at places like the A417 outside King Alfred’s West Site. We would prefer a solid 20mph block across the town. We are making a submission on behalf of the club, but I very much encourage you all to make your own submission as well – we know that there are some very negative social media comments out there making some very ill-informed and wild suggestions about the scheme, so it is important that your voices are heard in the consultation. You can find the consultation survey page here. Please note that the deadline for submissions is 5pm on Friday 28th July.
Dr Bike stall in Wantage Market Place, Saturday 29th July
A joint venture between our friends at Sustainable Wantage and Wantage & Grove Active Travel, a slot has been booked for a Dr Bike repair station in the Market Place between 9 and 2 on Saturday 29th July. This is a great opportunity to invite friends, family and anyone you know to bring their bikes along to be inspected, adjusted and generally taken care of to hopefully get them back on the road in a safe condition. The station will be set up in the west corner of the Market Square near the taxi rank so please go along and say hello!
Pilates classes
Quite a few of us are finding that Pilates is a helpful way to keep flexible and to build core strength, which has benefits for cycling as for many other things. We have recently received an approach from a local instructor with the possibility to offer some cycling specific classes. We also have our very own Sally B as a member and instructor. So if any of you are interested in finding out more, please contact me.
A final query – we have offered family rides in previous school summer holidays but have had mixed success. This summer we are conscious of being quite short of leaders (see above) and so aren’t sure how best to approach this. If you have any thoughts on this, please let me know.
Hopefully see you on a ride soon (once the rain and gales have stopped)
Best regards
John

John
Extraordinary bad weather has been a bit of theme in recent weeks and we have had to cancel a few rides for safety reasons. Hopefully, the torrential rain is now over and the floods will subside just in time for our Tuesday night rides to re-start! A few things to mention:
New Rides Programme
A huge amount of work has been put in by our committee working group, ably assisted by our ride leaders, to get the spring and summer rides programme complete and up on the website. I am delighted to say that it is all there now, through until September. Please note in particular that the Tuesday evening programme (apart from 1*) starts this coming Tuesday. Also note there are a great selection of special rides through the months, as well as a whole new series of weekend off-road rides. These are designed to be at the easier and less technical end of off-road riding and many will be suitable for gravel bikes as well as mountain bikes. We had a Ride Leaders’ meeting last month where we allocated leaders to many of the rides, but can I please ask Ride Leaders who couldn’t make that meeting to check the website listing and sign up for some of the vacant slots?
AGM – Wednesday 10th May
Our Annual General Meeting will be held at Grove Rugby Club on the evening of Wednesday 10th May. More details to follow, but an opportunity to review the last year, look forward to this summer, to vote on our committee for the year and also to give out our club awards of Best Club Person and Best Newcomer.
Committee roles – Safeguarding Officer and Webmaster
In general, our committee membership is fairly stable and we don’t see too much change year on year. However, there are a couple of roles where we could do with some additional support:
1) we are obliged to have the role of Safeguarding Officer on the committee. Jo Little has picked this up alongside her role as Secretary, but as with all clubs and societies this is an area of responsibility which is expanding so if anyone has an interest in helping us out with this then please let me know. More details can be found on the Cycling UK website.
2) for some years now, David Smith has done an excellent job in acting as our Webmaster, maintaining and improving our club website. This website is an extremely valuable resource for us, but it is quite complex and showing its age. For a while now David has felt he would like to step down from this role and so we would very much like to hear from anyone who could take this on. Brief details of the (necessarily quite technical) relevant skills and experience are:
Experience of working within a hosted environment.
Experience with PHP 5.6 and PHP 7.
Experience with MySQL SQL and administration.
Experience with HTML to any level.
Experience with accessing a hosted service through CPanel, this would be useful but not essential as it’s easy to learn.
Most of all, an enquiring mind to be able to work through the existing implementation.
Club 30th Anniversary – Sunday 23rd July
It doesn’t seem that long ago that we celebrated our 25th Anniversary as a club, but amazingly another 5 years have passed and so we can now celebrate the 30th! We are focussing on Sunday 23rd July, with multiple rides all finishing at Uffington Village Hall for refreshments. The centrepiece will be an all day multiple White Horses ride. Again, more details to follow, but another date for the diary.
Club clothing order
For those of you who recently placed an order for club branded clothing, please note that the orders are arriving imminently. You should have received an email from Jon Townsin with your individual order and payment details. Please check your junk mail if you haven’t seen this. We are looking forward to seeing lots of club jerseys out on rides as a result! Many thanks to Jon and Karen T for a lot of work in putting this bulk order together.
Botley Road railway bridge closure
In case you are not already aware, Botley Road under the railway bridge by the railway station in Oxford will be completely closed to motorised traffic for major work from Tuesday 11th April for several months. It is important to note that there will a way through for pedestrians and cyclists but buses including the S9 from Wantage will terminate at Osney Island. Botley Road businesses (including Warlands Cycles) and the Seacourt Park and Ride will remain open. Pros and cons for cycling – it is likely that this restriction will add to congestion on other routes into Oxford, on the other hand if you are a bike commuter on the Botley Road or Cumnor Hill then it could be quite a pleasant few months! Certainly I am planning some Oxford rides to take advantage of this.
Happy cycling!
]]>It’s been great to see such good numbers on recent rides. There is a sense of pent-up enthusiasm to get out and enjoy the area now that spring is sort of here, although we will be keeping an eye out for sleet and snow in the next week! A few things to bring to your attention:
Annual General Meeting – Wednesday 10th May 2023
We will be holding our AGM on the evening of Wednesday 10th May, at the Grove Rugby Club. We will arrange a food order with Millbrook Fish & Chips for 7pm and then business will start at 7.45. More details to follow, but this is a date for your diaries.
New Rides programme for Spring and Summer
We are putting the finishing touches to the full rides programme from April through to September. There is a Ride Leaders meeting (also at the Rugby Club) on the evening of Monday 13th March where we will get leaders assigned to as many rides as possible and we will then publish the programme.
Recent departures
I have had nice message from two members who have recently moved away (both to Wales, as it happens) and I wanted to share these with you. Firstly from Gerry Jones: “Thank you for warmly welcoming me to the club and for guiding me around the Vale these last couple of years”. And also from Joanna Houlston: “Thank you so much for welcoming me back to the club last year and I thoroughly enjoyed all the rides I did. Everyone was so nice to me and I really appreciated it. I even managed to build up some fitness by the end of the summer which was great. Please send my best wishes to all who may remember me as I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to anybody really, so especially the Tuesday 3* gang”. Although it is sad when great members move away, it is also really nice to receive such positive messages – and a tribute to the welcoming culture in the club.
In Memoriam: Marion Jones
I had a message from the family of Marion Jones that she has died recently. Marion and her husband Alan were longtime members in the early days of the club. Alan died in 2003 but Marion continued riding with us until 2009. Steve Swanton gave me these words: “Marion was an outgoing, indominatable, kind and warm-hearted lady. A lovely person to know. Both Alan and Marion will be warmly remembered”. Marion’s funeral will be at Wantage Methodist Church at 1pm on Monday 27th March, all are welcome and Steve and Lorna Swanton will be representing the club.
That’s enough for now – let’s assume that the snow forecast will soon pass and spring will return!
Best regards
John
